A history timeline is an awesome tool for kids to make connections of the people and events they are reading!
In this video, I encourage you to make your own, and share step by step how we made ours (including what dates go on what pages!)
At the time of this video we are using Ambleside Online with a 1st, 3rd, and 4th grader. I held off using a book of centuries for my year 4 and will have him do a timeline for a couple of years first. I just loved the visual aspect of it, and shorter page count/simpler setup.
Resist the temptation to do the work for them to get prettier, more thorough timelines. You don't even necessarily tell them what goes on it, but rather help them think of people or events they've read of in their books recently! This should be them making connections and pulling from what they find interesting or relatable.
Each child will have unique and different entries, and it’s very possible, even likely, that some of the better known events or people won’t make their timeline. That’s fine!
We aim to do this once a week or so (we've only gotten to it about every other week but it's still so valuable.)
