A few suggestions: - it isn't really necessary to cut the sides of the shirt this way. I find it better to cut from the bottom to the armpit. - after cutting the slits, I've pulled the fabric a little. It's easier to tie. - when tying the fabric, I've had the shirt on. This way you can have it as tight/loose as you want. - I didn't use a measuring tape. I put the shirt on and used my fingers to figure how deep to cut the slits. Then I'd mark on the inside of the shirt. I like the inside tie look better. It's a cleaner look.

Thank you for this! I am a bartender, and recently we were given staff t-shirts that are now mandatory to wear. By the time I got around to getting one, all that was left was a men's XL. Thanks to your great tutorial I can now feel feminine again in this t-shirt! Thanks again!!

I used some thinner strips at the bottom where I didn't have as much give room. But I had a thick t-shirt to work with. Your videos have been a huge help. I did wish I had listened to "practice on a throw away shirt first". But I didn't. But it was still so much fun!

Friendly word of advice, I love the tutorial! first time cutting/tying a shirt for me, but a good tip would be to say NOT to cut the sleeve seam before you start cutting lol. I cut mine but I'm gonna see how it turns out anyways.

@McCray0nz Good question, I've never tried it with a hoodie. The problem with a hoodie is the material is a lot thicker so the strips might have to be longer. You can make the sleeves smaller too, just continue cutting the slits down the arm, but again, the slits would have to be really deep because of the thickness. I hope that was what you meant!!!

Hi Laura! Yesterday (4/11/16) did an experimental shirt from a t-shirt I usually sleep in using your method. I must say that it came out perfectly! I went ahead and did my experimental shirt because I have a concert coming up in a week and a half in the T-shirt I'm wearing to the concert I wanted to reconstruct using this method. Now that I've done my trial shirt, my concert T-shirt will be perfect! I'm going to wear it with the fringe down the sides on the outside. My advice to anyone using Laura's method is to make sure that when you measure and if you have large beasts and your waist, waist size is a little bigger than Laura's, use an extra large t-shirt and make sure it is a t-shirt made from a softer Jersey that has more stretch. Also if you have a large t-shirt that isn't large enough to give you enough access to cut on the sides leaving your size plus the two to three inches for the ties , when you measure it across, maybe just cut enough curve out to remove the sides but not too much so that the t-shirt is it too tight across the breasts or your middle.

@purtygurl92 Yea it is possible if you put it in the washing just as it is. What I do is use the little drawstring bags you get with washing machine tablets, or inside something similar, keeps it from being tugged whilst in the wash. You could also sew along the edges to reinforce it some more with a sewing machine or by hand. I plan on making a long overdue video on this, its a subject there is not a lot of info about!

@breakfastbars no worries :) And thats a very good point and it goes with all t-shirt cutting, if you dont want your bra strap or any flesh to be on show then wear a tank top or spaghetti strap top under and it looks excellent and give it a different look, especially if you wear two contrasting colours!

HI Laura. Just want to tell you thank you cuz you saved my life on the 4th of July! I had no intensions of going out but then I did. I think if the strips are too thin it may not hold and depending on the fabric your top is could end up fraying. I often wear a strappy thin t shirt underneath if you don't want your skin on show, sometimes in a contrasting colour it looks really interesting! i hope this helped.
@dodgyredhead

I don't know I've never tired it but it sounds like a great idea! If your prepared to sew the other sides then it would be easy but if your not then I think you would only be able to use a top that is only a size or two too big for you, and the logo (if you have one) might be more to that side. But I think you should try it if you have a scrap t-shirt lying around...! if its ok with you I might try it at a later date and if it works I'll make a video, crediting you of course :)

@nintendorksent if you put it in the wash as is, then yea there is a possablilty of it coming undone or the cuts getting deeper or stretched which wont look good. Either you can wash it on delecates setting, hand wash it or what I do is i have a little bag (that you get with washing tablets for the washing machine, made of white net with a draw string) and I pop my top in there and in the wash. It gets cleaned but is kept together so's not to get all pulled a ruined.

do you have to cut the sleeves or can you leave them on?
@dodgyredhead

@SuperSweetheartchick no, if you want to keep them, then just continue the ties under the arms so you dont have big flappy arm sleeves. You can make them as tight or loose as you like, providing you have enough fabric. I hope that makes sense?

Hi there! I'm trying my hand at some shirt reconstruction and I was thinking about doing some two sets of knots down the back of my shirt. If I cut and tie longer strands towards the middle of the set of knots, will this make it more fitted? Thanks for your tutorial!! You're lovely!
@dodgyredhead

@mazaiyari1 You dont have to cut the sleeves short or the neck seam out either, just my preference. If you have really big sleeves you have to continue the ties under the arm or it will be baggy with a hole in the armpit lol!

great vid, just came across it from surfing other stuff. question, I wish to wear the shirt as per normal, you know, not off shoulder and stuff, as I do dress v conservatively (I could wear a thin top inside to cover the sides), but would it look weird if my shirt was the same type as the one you used, before you cut off the top?
