Great video finally someone explains the basics of how to make a compass. I have just one question would a stainless steel work in the place of the aluminium, I think stainless steel does not affect the magnetic field of the magnet. And I also wanted to know if the case could be made out of stainless steel. I'm asking this because I want to use the concept to make one that looks vintage.

Thank you for visiting. The inner diameter of the plastic is 38mm and the height is 25mm. A neodymium magnet has a diameter of 6 mm and a thickness of 2.5 mm. The countersunk screw has a diameter of 2 mm and a length of 15 mm. The nail is 1mm in diameter and 17mm in length. The aluminum plate has a diameter of 37 mm. The long side of the rectangular paper is 111mm and the widths are 5mm and 10mm.

Aluminum is a can of juice or beer. Other parts were also purchased at the DIY store. I didn't buy it online. Neodymium magnets and iron screws don't really care about their dimensions. All you have to do is fit it in a plastic case.
