Great bench love the idea of suspending the seat rather laying across the top, think I might try something similar but embed bolts in the concrete maybe from a steel bar to spread the load

Thanks! I thought about routing a channel between the legs and adding some flat steel bar. However, after strength testing it I decided there was no need. Really like that blue color and it looks awesome with the concrete texture. It would be less wobbly if your turned the concrete legs upside down with the wider face at the bottom. That'd look cool too.

Sorry, late comer to this video. A possible solution for your troweling issue: Tape off exposed fiberboard edges and use a moist to wet rubber float. If you have a flat hand sander with a rubber grip base, you could use that instead of investing in another tool.

Definitely not top heavy. The concrete keeps it solid to the ground. The wobble you saw in the outside shots was due to sitting on uneven deck boards

Glass fiber is way stronger than rebar. Rebar would actually weaken the concrete in this case, by separating it into two thin layers....

Are you using a float or a trowel for primary finishing of the concrete? A magnesium float is the proper tool to use to put the primary finish on the concrete. Let the concrete set up for about an hour, then with a little bit of water on the surface, you can work the surface to a smooth finish with the float. Also, a little vibration during the initial pour will consolidate the concrete better, and improve the strength of the final pour. A random orbit sander, applied parallel to the base of the form, on the side of the form will consolidate the concrete. This will drive any air bubbles up and out of the mix, but it will also drive the aggregate (or reinforcing fibers) down to the bottom. Just remember, a little goes a long way.

You can just add some grey or charcoal pigment to the mix. Home Depot sells some liquid pigment, and there are some powdered pigments available on Amazon (or special order from Home Depot).

Thanks! Check out my Instructables on GFRC projects for a lot more details. It is a special type of alkali resistant glass fiber (that doesn't break down in concrete, like regular fiberglass does).

I definitely think you could. I used a touch of blue in the last marble concrete video, but didn't pre mix so it was a darker blue. The black and granite color combo would also be really cool!

You're using a margin float? The cheapest thing I could find that will do the trick is a $3.00 flooring trowel from HD, utilizing the smooth edge of course.

A magnesium float is more expensive, but my understanding is that the magnesium pulls the crema to the surface, so gets smoother results

Have you tried plasticine instead of silicone. I tried it. No cure time to wait for. Just get a extruder tool from eBay. Cut the hand turn bar off and use your drill to work it. Use you ball tool to shape it. I used some machine oil on it to get real smooth finish. Would love to see tips for tool finishing the GFRC as I too have issues. I was thinking that maybe wait for it to part cure then mist with water and tool. But have yet to try.

GFRC doesnt like being troweled. You have to wait a LONG time for it to be troweled smooth and nice. The mix you want is called ECC (Engineered Concrete Composite) from Buddy Rhodes.

What is the difference? I was troweling the face coat only (no fibers)....is it the high cement content or something?

@@modustrial yes the high cement. Look on Buddys site for the differences. Its a stronger mix than GFRC, you can also full pour it and because it has smaller fibres in the mix you arent in fear of exposing the larger fibres used in GFRC.
