You need to get Akadama soil. Not Keto soil, not sure why this Japanese guy translates it like this but go search online for Bonsai supply store. Westerners don’t seem to know this but Koke dama is used in creating Bonsai planted into the Koke Dama. It’s a special red clay like soil unique in Japan and has been used in Bonsai planting for thousands of years. You should not be using peat moss or clay as it would rot. Akadama though it has characters of clay like it’s NOT clay and not so acidic. It has great drainage and because of this it’s used in Bonsai container plants. You cannot substitute this. Go look up Akadama.

@@nvckennot only that it would look ugly. I mean perlite…it’s used in the inside of soil. It would also blow with wind. And it’s not only for functional purpose it’s for practical and cosmetic purposes. I mean why should the Japanese use perlite or pumice?! You are aware how dama is created? It’s part of bonsai culture. We put bonsai tree planted into the Koke dama. No one uses pumice or especially perlite in bonsai it’s used for tropical planting. Not for Japanese bonsai. I mean why do westerners always seem to jack up a traditional culture by ruining the original culture that has been passed down by our Japanese ancestors?? It’s like saying to the Europeans why should they not use shortening to make Danish pastries. Jeez. If you want to learn something new that is not part of your culture try to learn by being respectful. And try not to screw it all up by misappropriating a culture that’s not really part of yours.
This is not marimo which is water based plant. This is not the same kind of moss…
