We make these all the time when we're camping. Include whatever ingredients we have - bacon, sausage, green pepper, leftover steak...... We do let it boil a bit longer. Super easy, delicious, and minimal clean up after. And we use the hot water to wash other dishes when we're done. :)

It works great on a gas stove or open flame. The only thing you have to do is make sure it is boiling for 10 min (some say 12). Really works, is delish, and nearly no cleanup, the perfect food (especially for kids learning to cook) love it!

My husband and I made them this a.m. We put sausage, onion, bacon bits, cheese,salt and pepper and Seasonall. They were AWESOME!! Good stuff. (Yeah, I know...the stuff heart attacks are made of...BUT we don't do that often!!!) We had to boil about 12 minutes because of all the ingredients. Good for camping!!! Have a great day!!!

I'm reticent to use a ziplock bag as the primary food contact surface. As an alternative, I would use an "oven bag," which is also plastic but designed for higher temperatures. Oven bags can be used for turkeys, pot roasts, etc. which have high temperature boiling juices. The only problem with oven bags is that they're not "ziplock" One would have to "twist tie" them which would result in an oddly shaped alternate. To remedy this, I would trim the oven bag to fit inside of the ziplock bag.

Much less time consuming to cook an omelet the more traditional way. But this is a pretty neat alternative.

Not so sure about the technique for an omelet, but I use a very similar technique (w/ microwave safe cling wrap), to poach eggs for things like Eggs Benedict. It works pretty well.

Just wanted to say that we make these with grated cheese, ham, green peppers, onions, etc. and put them in the ziplock bags - then into our cooler for camping!! It makes such an easy breakfast - just pop the pre-filled ziplock bags into the pot of boiling water - and voila!! Gourmet breakfast in the great outdoors!! (The cooking time is about 15 minutes because of the extra ingredients.)

@blueboywater have you ever had eggs benidict? the eggs in them are poched eggs. I have no clue how to make them but it involves you cracking the egg into a container then holding the container into boiling water with the egg in the water while you are still holding it. This causes the egg white to be cooked and the yolk to be runny

@TheFrenchi23 Yeah, that is one method. Another is to just crack the egg into the water and try to shape it with a spoon. Using something to submerge the egg with would be much easier.

I would do it in a seal a meal bags for a large group of people! You could make the bags up ahead of time and plop them in the water...everyone could enjoy bkfst at the same time. No ziplocks. Also, Lauder makes a healthy boil in a bag.
@SiliconM4trix

Just so people can relax... Ziplock bags are polyethylene; Which is a very hardy plastic. As long as you don't burn it, you won't get any of those potentially nasty hydrocarbons (carbohydrates you don't eat). Boiling water will weaken the bag a bit, but it won't leech strange chemicals into your food. NOTE: I'm not sure what the zippers are made of.. but the simple clear sandwich ziplock bags should be totally fine.

If you have only tried this on electric stoves, then how can you issue a warning about cooking this over flames? Campers and hikers have been cooking ziplock omelettes in boiling water over open flames for years. it really amazes me how many people do not understand the principles of cooking.

That plastic is not meant to be heated. I would not do this all the time or ever. I do have friends that do this while camping so they don't make a mess in the pan. I have wondered if there is any other material that is safe to heat that you could use. This plastic when heated will leach all sorts of chemicals into the food.

Entertaining and interesting. Unfortunately, this seems like an example of how to use the most resources possible in order to make an omelette. Plus, I'm too impatient to wait for water to boil and then wait another ten minutes for the omelette to cook. My arteries need their cholesterol now! A fun sequel to this might be to incorporate a Rube Goldberg device as well -- see if you can really maximize the number of resources needed.

This isn't anything new. This is a classic recipe used mostly by campers, because a ziploc bag is A LOT easier to clean and deal with than a pan and you can eat it right out of the bag, so you don't have to clean a plate Also, his warning at the end about now using gas stoves is totally wrong. I usually make this on camping stoves, which are the same as most home gas stoves. You just need to be smart about doing it.

LOL. This is probably a pretty bad omelette. A good omelette has both cooked (fried) egg on the outside and almost raw egg inside. The fried egg has a strong smell, so you don't want to cook the omelette too much. With the technique in the video, you get a McDonald's omelette at best.

Ten minutes for an omelet is too much. Why don't you invest in a non stick pan and make a French omelet that's done in a few minutes? Check out the omelet videos on KZitem which show the stir and shake technique. It's fun and healthier than cooking in a plastic bag. Plastic isn't really meant for cooking. The chemicals will leech into the egg, and over time it messes up your health.
