Hi Kristen, I am working on a cover as a gift for a friend and am loving how it is turning out. I also have some "fancy" stitches I never use on my machine and have been having a great time. My sewing spot looks like a disaster but who cares!!! Best and most creative journal cover hands down. Thank you.

I really like this. This was a well put together and comprehensive tutorial. In addition to journal covers, now that you taught us how to measure for any size, I would like to make one for my church Missal. For the journals, I have lots of fabric but it would also be fun to use old clothing that can't be donated as is and purchasing buttons or elastic and fix to would donate them but would be time consuming and expensive expensive. I do save buttons off any clothes that are worn out. Love the artistic scrappy look and the ties.

I have been looking for a gift idea to give a couple of friends and this fits my ideas perfectly. Thank you for your video. I have one quick question though, when you start piecing on to the bedding, do you have another piece of fabric underneath the batting? It goes through the machine without this fabric nicely especially with a decorative stitches? In other words you’re not making a quilt sandwich?
@ScrapFabricLove
2 жыл бұрын
No not making a 3 layer sandwich. Just the scraps on the batting and then adding the backing at the end so we can still flip it right side out and stitch it closed. If you did the backing at the same time as the rest then you would need to add an outer binding to cover the raw edges if you see what I mean.

I am a novice sewer and ive NEVER quilted before... Can i just use a straight stitch? And can i just... whack the fabric onto the batting any which way?
@ScrapFabricLove

Yes you can use a straight stitch for sure! There is a technical top and bottom to batting but most people don’t pay too much attention to it and for a journal cover it doesn’t matter so don’t worry about it!

I would opt for one change. Make the lining piece shorter, about 2" shorter, so that it goes under the sleeve, but doesn't reach to the left/right sides completely. Then turn RSO through one of those sides, they will be under the sleeves, so they don't need to be finished AND you don't have an external seam left to turn under at all.

you can slow the video down as much as you want to. Just click on the settings icon at the bottom right. The voice will be odd, but then you get the pictures as slow as you may need. I can follow Kristen easily, but I still sometimes slow the video down so I can catch the details. Don't give up! It's totally worth the effort!
