Rogue likes are the one type of game that feels super scary to me, especially since I'm not good on combat. But I'm legit interested in Hades so I may give it a chance someday.

When I got Hades I played until I had completed absolutely freaking everything. I rarely end a game like that thinking I'll never play it again, but I was so thoroughly done with it after the slog to get the last badge from the resource director that I thought this might be the exception. Anyway, I'm working on getting the last of Skelly's statues in the file I started last month after reading an article on the sequel. It do be that way sometimes.

sniper monkey ooooooo so about feeling overpowered, it’s need to be toned correctly or the game will feel just tooo hard if you’re not getting the OP stuff and too easy if you have them( i had that happen to me in BPM and hades) and that was not satisfying at all.

@@blurbstv in inscription i didn’t feel it as much, idk the game was more fun to be op in and it was more about the story and the puzzles not the card game so i feel it was adding to the fun part if the game, but in BPM and hades the gameplay was just not fun after you kill everyone in one hit or have so much healing, its heavily dependent on the game and what it’s going for.

I thought about including procedural generation but I feel like it's a given at this point. I don't think I've ever played a roguelike without it, although I'm interested to see if a developer could make it interesting without procedural generation.

Simple is simply not true. Core foundational roguelikes are/were based on RPGs and were far from simple. Find me someone that says that Angband, Nethack and ADOM (those forefathers of the genre are still around) are simple and I'll show you a liar. Also, Dwarf Fortress.
@blurbstv
7 ай бұрын
I'm not referring to "simple" in means of gameplay structure or design, I'm referring to it more as comprehendible structures for the player. "Is the game easily understandable for a new player?" If yes, then that simplicity/ease of access, is a desired mechanic used to attract new players. While depth still makes up each of the games core design elements.

The content seem near Metrovania than rogue like. I'm not seing about equip or item thats sometime need to testing. If using this item can help or worse. My suggestion, you can give the 4th Pilar. Enemy progress, as we player to learn our avatar. The enemy can learn from our progres. Like sending bunch little enemy before the boss show up.. 😮 weit that will be soul game

"How to make a roguelike" *Shows exclusively roguelites* Roguelikes are run based, procedurally generated, turn-based, grid-based, and have no meta progression. If you can look at the gameplay of ROGUE then look at another game and say "Yeah, those look similar" then congrats, it's a roguelike because it is LIKE ROGUE. All of the games you've mentioned are run based but that's where it ends for most of them. Many of them have meta progression, most don't have actual procedural generation opting to use prebuilt and shuffled "Rooms", the majority you mentioned have real-time action, and only one you showed was grid-based. Gungeon, Hades, Slay the Spire, Into the Breach, Dead Cells, and inscryption all have meta progression which immediately disqualifies them. Downwell doesn't but it's still real-time.

I think, I and most other people consider roguelike an umbrella which roguelite fits under. Kind of like the whole "a square is a rectangle, but a rectangle isn't a square thing". I've always considered roguelites a subcategory of roguelikes. The Meta progression within One of these games is a wide scale, some like enter the gungeon have such a small amount that it's barely worth considering them roguelites rather than roguelikes, while Hades has so much meta progression that it barely fits in the genre at all. At the end of the day, these genres are just silly ways for us to define the lineage of games that we play. I could get super nitpicky with every genre and say that no game is really in the same genre as any other, but that would be really boring and really fickle.
@blackrapier713

@@blurbstv while it's true the popular definition does conflate the two I don't think it's right to do so. It's like if I tried to call Metroid prime a boomer shooter. Sure it has first person shooting with movement mechanics but that doesn't mean it's a boomer shooter like Doom, Quake, and Ultra kill. Then there's the fact that diluting the rogue-like genre with twin stick arcade shooters, run-based action platformers, and God forbid survivors-likes makes it difficult to find actual roguelikes such as ADOM, Nethack, and Doom RL.

But hades is not roguelike. Hades has nothing in common with the rogue, besides random generation and permadeath. It's like calling any game that has leveling up an RPG.
@blurbstv

I mean no disrespect by saying this, but the roguelike genre is a genre made up entirely on the ideas of permadeath and random generation. While those might not be the important parts of rogue to you, those are the parts that make up the genre.

Okay I see, I think I've always viewed roguelites like a square and roguelikes as a rectangle. All roguelites are roguelikes but not all roguelikes are roguelites. I would definitely agree that Hades is a roguelite but because of my previous definition I would also say that that makes it a roguelike.

@@blurbstv Roguelikes are turn based tile based strategy games that bare similarity to or "likeness" of the game "Rogue." Invert your comparison. If Rogue isn't a "Hades-like," Hades isn't a "Rogue" "like." The same is true for "roguelite," a term which got its name from "roguelikes that are lite on permadeath" such as the mystery dungeon franchise. Realistically neither term fits because they're both paying homage to the game Rogue. Further we have many, many instances of permadeath and proc-gen games that arent roguelikes. Icy Tower Survival Crisis Z(Arcade mode) Jetpack Joyride Gauntlet Slay Edition Dracula Undead Awakening Tetris Tekken(again arcade/story mode) Hell if you put a level randomizer into any arcade game, you've got exactly the style of game people are asking for when they misuse, and mal-apply the term "roguelike" or "roguelite." What you mean is effectively "arcade."
@OniricChef

Tip number 0: it's "rogue LITE", or "action roguelike". There are naming conventions for a reason, geez....
@joefadda578

"action roguelike" is an oxymoron, like "cozy horror" or "massively multiplayer solo game" Roguelikes are inherently turn based, when someone says "action roguelike" they're more accurately wanting the loop of an arcade game, taken outside of an arcade cabinet. -Rogue Legacy mirrors the gameplay of Ghosts n' Goblins to a T. This is to the point that one of the advertised reviews listed on its steam page refers to it as "a modern day ghosts n goblins" -Vampire Survivors mirrors Geometry Wars, Asteroids and a million other top down arcade shooters. -Gauntlet: Slay Edition has an "arcade mode." Guess what it does? Adds a series of randomized dungeons on a run-based arcade loop. -Tekkens "arcade mode"(renamed to "story" from T4 onward) has this exact loop that people are referring to as "roguelike" for no other reason than marketing buzzwordery. -Downwell is labelled as a "roguelike." It mirrors Jetpack Joyride and Icy Tower damn near perfectly. Both JJ and IT are referred to as arcade games despite never being released within arcade cabinet Effectively what people mean is "arcade" and we need to de-vilify the term "arcade" as a genre descriptor.
