I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. I have a couple questions maybe someone can answer. Early in the video while using the AA battery casing. What is the purpose of the baking soda and the super glue? Also, is the AA battery casing needed or could you use a piece of wood, glass, or any other insulating material to mount the AA battery core?

Baking soda will act as both filler and added support for the super glue. It's just to fill in the hole and keep the cathode in place. All the casing is doing is essentially acting as an insulated handle. You could use anything but if you already have it why not. It could be any piece of conductive material really battery's are just common but more dangerous in my opinion.
