This is the perfect solution to add to an apothecary type cabinet I have with small drawers that are not very deep. It is way too easy to accidentally dump everything out and it holds my makeup, of all things. You can imagine the feeling I get when a drawer has to be caught in a panic before my makeup hits the tile floor. I sit across from it with it on my left side sitting looking in my makeup mirror and open so many drawers as I'm putting on my makeup (it has 16 drawers). I'm confined with space, so this is the best I can do besides throw away a lot of makeup and I like to have choices, so that isn't an option. 😂 I have been trying to think of a way to keep the drawers from falling out, but there are a few I purposely take out and set on the top of it because I need more than one thing from the drawer and it is just easier the way. Things like the drawer I keep tons of makeup brushes in, for instance, so I needed a good solution to cover all my needs. Compared to my idea, this will be so much easier. Thank you!!! You amaze me with your talent. I know this is a small thing compared to what you do, but sometimes it's the little things that are just what someone like me may need to make our day. Keep up the excellent work! 😁

Fantastic idea! I never thought of using epoxy alone for a spring- loaded stop. What I learned was cutting a recess in two short dowels to accept the ends of a spring, and tension kept the spring attached to the dowels. Then, one dowel would be glued in the hole, which had to be deep enough to shoulder both dowels when the spring was released, while just allowing enough of the free dowel to serve as a stop, and both dowels could be compressed to be flush with the surface, when the spring was under pressure. It sounds incredibly complicated, but it isn't. Your method is still easier. In case you're curious, the groove on the dowels were usually cut with a simple jig that would hold a chisel at the proper depth, so that when using a stop, the chisel would only cut to a maximum depth of 1/8". During the test fit, I can trace the part of the spring that needs to be buried between that groove and the end to achieve a flush finish, so the dowel could move freely. I usually bury the spring 1/32 below the surface of the dowel to allow for expansion in various temperatures and humidity, also. I made a lot of these spring-loaded stops for a friend's camper build almost 20 years ago. Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures, and he long since sold the camper. A slight tweak to this concept was his drawer pulls, which I built by using the spring-loaded dowel method to lock the drawer fronts from moving, while the camper was in transit. I hid another dowel in the drawer front that also slid into the hole used for the drawer stop, which was actuated by a spring-loaded lever attached to the drawer pull, so you would literally have to turn the drawer pull to push the pin in the drawer front against the pin in the drawer frame, so they could be flush with the drawer edges, allowing the drawer to be opened. I beveled the pin in the frame to also allow the drawer to be closed without turning the handle on the drawer. It took me six hours to figure out how to make all that work, by the way. If I were to do this, again, I would use hardwood square stock at 1/4" width, set every 6 inches along one edge of the drawer, bevel the edge to accept the drawer closing without need to turn the handle, and use another 1/4 inch piece of square stock to make the actuated pins in the drawer front. In either method, the mechanism for actuation of the pins allowing the drawer to open is hidden in a recess in the back of the drawer front. A thin band of metal is cut to form a lever, and a brad or rivet is used for a fulcrum. A 1/8" spring is used to return the lever to closed position, when the handle is released. Ultimately, this works similarly to a common door knob latch. Hopefully, I've inspired you. Using pin and spring releases with pin and lever catches are very popular in homemade campers, homemade wooden cases, and several other applications, especially where the case is moved frequently. I think such closures would be great for chuck boxes used in tailgating and camping, in luggage, and in toy chests.

constantinos schinas is your goal for today to counter every comment that compliments Tamar on this idea? Or do you just want to be right about the definition of „simplicity“? Or what is it? In my book, it’s a great and pretty simple solution, unless you don’t know how to mix epoxy. Every drawer slide has a spring-loaded release as well, are they over-engineered because of that? Re-thought.
@EM1473

constantinos schinas “rethink” is one word.
@leehaelters6182
5 жыл бұрын
@@toolsarecool, to be fair, I think that Constantinos is participating as if in a design school crit. His point seems to have some engineering soundness. For example, the spring loaded dowel must necessarily bear on only part of its hole to resist the hitting forces. A limited area to resist compression and deformity, especially with the need to make the fit loose enough. A non sprung dowel may sit deeper and more tightly, with the load being spread over a wider area, with possibly more longevity. On the other hand, it does no good when it becomes lost. And none of this detracts from Tamar's terrific video presentations!

nice, I might use that second tip on my cabinet in my camper, i put an 8" deep drawER on 16" full extension slides because it is quite wide, so it should help prevent binding (the drawer is shallow to allow clearance for plumbing, but the drawer sides go all the way back 16" but the drawer back is at 8" back. The problem is that the drawer will open all the way past the 8" point, so this spring loaded dowel could function as a removable stop.

Did you ever notice the video where Matthias (Wandel) installed a spring loaded dowel stop (w/ bottom sanded to approx. 45 degrees) so that his table saw sled stops before the blade protrudes from the rear, preventing injury? Really nifty; I put one on my tablesaw sled and my screw advanced boxjoint jig as well.
