‘Just make the comic’ that is literally step one but for nearly everyone trying to make a comic it seems like a mountain. I know it was for me at once, and I think just doing it and improving with new things from small projects to short stories grow into potential, and later doing your big projects will be so fufilling with all your new skills and experience. Also, Hunter x Hunter was a great example! It’s digestible as a art style and has some god-tier moments of art and god-tier level of writing only togashi could do.
@superrobotfish6701

cool video, but what a lot of people don't seem to get is how important good panel layout and composition is. both One and Togashi are really skilled at this aspect of art, and just from looking at the few panels of The pervert I can see that the artist is a professional that chooses to draw in this simplistic style to save time. someone with ''bad'' art and no understanding of composition will probably never be successful.

Thank you for commenting! Something that helped me find my style was "respectfully stealing" lol. What I mean by this is I might like how one person draws bodies but how someone else draws hair and a third person who draws eyes. By fusing all of those elements with your own pen stroke, you'll have your own style! I know it's not that simple and can take a WHILE until you find a style you are satisfied with, but I hope that can help haha. Best of luck!

Or just like many already explained, the whole op protagonist mixed in with the superhero genre that was rarely ever used in mangas, is why One Punch Man succeeded. Only the humor could have pushed it forward and many other works have better humor. It came at the right time, when people were tired of the same shounen protagonists that start weak and all serious. They wanted a ridiculously powerful character that is quite humoristic. Hence why Overlord succeeded too. I think it is funny how we like to constantly repeat ' You can do it if you want!' as if people haven't heard it all of their lives already. You don't can never have success just based off of determination. You will need much more...That or simply the luck to arrive at the perfecr moment and then get a perfect anime to boost you up

As someone who is writing short stories, and is planning to do a full epic-style novel, like Mahabharata, I also wanted to venture in the journey of creating a comic-book/manga. Yeah, my artstyle, from 1 to 10 is 4.8 to 5.2. I can make some poses, I do have a basic understanding of anatomy, but I suck at perspective and drawing characters is such dynamic poses. Still, I do have a story I wanted to tell, even if my art-style is kinda meh, so this video really helps me to do it. Remember, your story is what matters, that's precisely what you're telling us. Do or do not, there is no try.

well the looks of art is in the eyes of the reader and their personal taste, just cuz some one dont like the style doesnt mean its bad: it might not be 100% accurate or aesthetic but it does not make it a bad art since its all about taste of people: some might not like it and some might like it: in manga and comic it could be totaly about the story, just like if we reading books theres no art, we use our own imagination for the characters, if we add art to those books we would still read it since we know of the story and it wont matter if the art is not accurate like sociaty describes (as in ppl think that everythin in art has to be accurate like real life, which is so wrong as art is free and subjective and doesnt have to look like real life)
@MonitorComics
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing you make some great points! In a perfect world, I would agree with you that as long as you have a good story your comic or manga will succeed. I agree that art is free and doesn't have to be bound to reality. The idea that art should 100% mimic the physical world is an art movement known as Naturalism. It was really popular throughout art history, but in the 21st century, it's just one of many artistic approaches. Unfortunately the phrase "don't judge a book by its cover" is wishful thinking because many people do indeed judge something by how it looks. As you said, someone might not like how the art looks, but that doesn't make it inherently "bad." It'll just be much harder for a large audience to give it a shot if they are immediately turned off. I think we both agree though that ANYBODY can create a great comic, no matter their skill level! Thank you again for sharing your thoughts!

Nice video as always! Something else I would like to bring up is the fact that despite ONEs artwork was being considered crude, people underestimate, the fact that he was a master at conveyance through visuals. People who call his artwork “bad” tend to neglect this in fact, he was a master at being able to sell people on a scene which I believe was the true culprit behind his web comics success. Even in the official manga many of the panels are literally just murata re-drawing the original page layout in his own style. I think you have a point when you say writing matters but I also think art plays a big role because I absolutely believe that a comic that has both bad visuals and bad convenience can absolutely take away from readers experience. In fact, I would say it is most likely the biggest thing to pay attention to as comics are a visual medium. Todd McFarlane in an interview acknowledged that spawns writing wasn’t all that great, but it’s like he himself said he could sell a comic that looks pretty easier than he can sell an ugly comic that has good writing, and his success is a testimony to that. I think people who don’t make good artwork, can make a good comic , and I think such a project would be good practice for them. But I also have to stress the importance of conveyance through visuals and the importance of good writing being that comics with bad artwork need to have a lot going for them to make up for that bad artwork.

Thank you for taking the time to comment! I completely understand where you are coming from! It's easy for people to say "don't judge a book by its cover," when the reality is most of us do anyway. Whether it's relationships or buying products, we use visuals as a first indicator. With comics and manga it's the same. Someone might be drawn to a pretty cover or panel they see online. That's unfortunately just the name of the game. This video was mainly to inspire artists who are just starting out that they can continue to improve and they shouldn't NOT make comics just because they think their art is bad. At the end of the day, content is key! Best of luck!

It can be found here. galaxyheavyblow.web.fc2.com/ ONE stated in an interview that Murata came across his webcomic one day, binged all of OPM and offered to redraw it for him There isn't much information about how it got so popular, I'd assume he advetised by word of mouth and on social media. The writing was always was carried the story There isnt much information about him making money from the webcomic. As a graphic designer, I know personal websites can only make money if they run ads on them. So I assume he wasn't making much ONE stated in the interview he mostly drew OPM to entertain himself. I would say that in a comic, what makes truly bad art is not it being ugly, or not attractive, its more so art that doesn't tell the story, for example if you dont know whats happening because the backgrounds are non existent that is a problem that makes the story worse, if you dont know what the characters face is meant to be saying that is a problem. Your art doesn't need to be good if the story is good, the only time it is truly bad is if the art fails to tell the story.

Good stories can be written, yes. But I disagree with the One Punch Man example. Any story embellished, by Yusuke Murata or other very talented artist, will tremendously increase the level of success of the manga. The author of JoJo himself wrote it in his "Manga in Theory and Practice" book : Art is the mangaka killer technique, when it comes to manga, art is god. To make a successful manga, you will need at least a passable level of art. This is just my take.

I wonder too, with the advent of AI generated AI... The novelty of 'pretty' 'perfect' formulaic art may actually go out of style. With rougher 'imperfect' but uniquely styled art grabbing more attention due to being more human. It's ultimately all about the storytelling. Make a character that is fun like Saitama, make a story that is captivating like HxH. Art should complement the story being told. But at the very least, artwork being readable is all you really need.

I live in the middle of Europe. I have a great idea for a Manga, but there's no one who could draw it for me. And I'm terrible at drawing. I can barely draw a decent human being. Should I try to make the Manga as a webcomic on my own, and see it it goes anywhere, or should I keep trying to find someone to pair up with? Or should I just give up? Please answer me. I need your advice.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and share! In my opinion, anyone can become a good artist, but it doesn't happen overnight. As long as you continue to practice, research, and experiment you'll improve. There's no shame in trying to find a separate artist though, especially If you aren't satisfied with your skill level. Everyone starts somewhere. I made a ton of comics and posted them to sites like Webtoons and Tapas when I was starting out. It's the best way to improve. Just be considerate of your overall goals. If you're working towards improving then go for it! You'll only help yourself by practicing more! If your goal isn't personal satisfaction and you're looking for something like a lucky break, then I personally don't think webtoons is the way to go. I wouldn't give up because there are always routes you can take like using social media to get your work seen, sending to publishers, entering contests etc. It all just boils down to what you want out of it. I wouldn't ever say give up though because every great artist starts as a beginner. Just set small goals and keep pushing through, I'm sure you'll find your answer then! Best of luck!

@@MonitorComics Honestly, what I'm trying to create is a good story. I just can't figure out in what type of media do I want that story to exist in. Should it be a book? Manga? Anime? Video game? I don't know. I already know what I want to create, but I don't know if I'm ever gonna be able to present it in a way that is acceptable for the norms of society. For example, if I make a manga that has some great characters and storytelling, but the art makes you want to carve your own eyes out, is that acceptable or not?

@@palkoescobar5997 if your biggest goal is to have people judge your work based on the story, then I believe a novel, light novel, etc is a great route to go! You'll be able to focus solely on the writing! As you get further in, you might attract an artist who would be happy to make a manga or comic adaptation. I wouldn't concern myself with the art too much if your main goal is to tell a good story! It's also hard to condense good writing into short manga chapters. I believe you'd have a lot more freedom if you stuck to just text format. I hope that helps! Best of luck and keep us updated!

How did One make the One punch man webcomic?
@MonitorComics
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to comment! I don't know if he has ever given a direct answer, but my best guess is he drew it traditionally and then scanned it to add text and dialogue digitally. My other idea is that he may have created it 100% digitally using drawing software and a digital art tablet! Hope that could help!

Thank you for taking the time to comment! ANYBODY can become BETTER at art! Art is just a muscle. The more you work on it, the better and quicker you will become. As cliche as it sounds, you just need to study hard and put the hours into practicing and you will improve. Study SMART though! Like designate times to study hands, shoes, eyes, bodies, etc. If you go into it with small goals, you'll be able to achieve them quickly and grow! Once you figure out how to draw a shoe a few times, you'll always be able to create it again without reference! It's all about putting the time in to learn the basics and grow from there! I've been drawing regularly at least once a day since I was a kid, I'm 21 now so I've been practicing for over 15 years lol. Just work on fun projects and keep yourself busy! Also, have fun! I made SO many comics as a kid and it helped me grow A LOT. Do what fits you best! Hope that helps and best of luck!

The funny thing is that ONEs original Onepunch man manga reads and is WAY better than Muratas redrawn version. It's "Uglier", but emotions, expressions, look, there's just way more Heart in it. And I say that as someone who loves excellent top tier artwork. ONES original OPM manga is the best version to experience the story, the anime and the Murata version are nowhere close. They actually ruined the story.

I think saying that One Punch Man and HunterXHunter excel in spite of their art, is selling One and Togashi a little short. Both series still have very strong layouts and striking images despite low technical ability, there's very minimal difference between the way panels are composed in both the original web comic of OPM and Murata's redraw.

Ideally we can’t deny the fact then when we read comics we tend to gravitate towards the “good art” comics, however I think finding your art style is the most important my ideal technique is based on Shoujo I’m a huge fan xD) so I think to find your style think of the genre if it’s manga you could decide if you want Josei, Shounen etc ideas. However I looked at more styles and it seems that there are people with incredible artwork however the storyline lacked so much it had no passion or feel to it, there were so many where the art was decent (with all due respect and honesty) and the comedy and meaning conveyed was absolutely phenomenal, compared to a really detailed comic I read. Ideally it’s all about trying thank you for your encouragement and finding your medium is also controversial hard work can make cheap supplies more efficient, and complete your projects (I personally have to work on this) Thank you!^^
