I found this really fun project on Pinterest which was Pinned form "Woodsmith etips". Link below to that pin. I loved this idea which is using a 3/4 inch t plumbing t fitting you make three wood pieces: A handle, and two mallet face surfaces and you have a mallet. I am really starting to like these shop tool projects. I did this project with my lathe and turned the wood pieces. One could very easily just shape the pieces by hand and or power tools to have a version that did not require a lathe.
You actually use the t fitting to cut threads into the wood pieces. After making a tenon on the wood blank I remove it from the lathe and start it into the threaded hole on the t fitting. Prir to this I used a file to file 4 groves into the threads and this will help to cut threads into the wood pieces. After cutting the threads into the piece for the handle I returned it to the lathe and finished turning the handle. Then I can part of the handle to the proper length and sand the end. I do the same basic process for the two pieces that will serve as the mallet faces. I used several coats of danish oil for the finish on the wood and assembled the pieces into the t fitting one final time. I enjoyed this project very much! There is just something about making you own tools! This was very fun and I think it is going to work great!
