@AidinRobbins

For the most part it's the same as grading anything else- my usual struggle with drone footage is pulling out enough color contrast, so I make sure to boost the saturation before grading and finish it off with split toning in the color wheels. Other than that, my other grading tutorials should apply :)

Hi Aidin. Do you usually scout a location before making a video about it?? What would your approach be if you didnt have the luxury to scout?? We have been making travel films for sometime now and we don't have any background in movie making or cinematography. We have learnt everything about it by watching channels like yours. One of the toughest things about travel film-makin, in our opinion, is how unpredictable a place can be. We have had occasions when a place is underwhelming or difficult to shoot or bad weather or bad lighting yada yada yada..... How do you insure yourself w.r.t these scenarios. We find it really hard to come up with a 8-10 min video with just 1 or 2 days in a given place. Is there any storytelling hack/trick you would suggest?? btw, we love your channel and have learnt a lot by just deconstructing some of your videos. Love from India.

Thanks for making this one man! I feel that many people see travel videos, how cool the person looks in them, and think their life is just always amazing. And it gets many to want to replicate those people and have a similar lifestyle. When I started I did it for the wrong reasons. I eventually worked with Mike Corey/Fearless and Far on KZitem and realized this idea of being "the cool guy with the camera that everyone liked" was not at all what it seemed. I then shifted entirely into making documentaries and helping tell peoples stories in an artistic way to make people care about a subject. Travel videos are a good way to start to see where it will take you or if you are truly passionate about filmmaking at all. But if anyone is doing it for followers, likes, or their ego, it will eventually wear on you. But for many it takes getting to the point in your dream to be let down by your own expectations of that dream. This is what happened to me anyway. As you said, do it for the right reason. And that reason is, imagine if no one knew you were making your videos or even watched them, would you still make them? Thanks for reading.

The dune is silent, but for the murmur of a soft breeze. You kneel down and run your fingers through the sand, your hand like a tongue tasting the emotion locked in every grain. A symphony of a thousand subtle yet distinct emotions washes over you. Somehow it all computes in the vastness of your mind. It’s like you raked your tongue through the depths of Aidins turbulent psyche. Your eyes well up and Aidin rolls down your face. A loud crack of Aidin, like a gunshot, startles you from above, and the sky begins to pour with heavy rain. The sound of rain soothes your soul. The landscape - or, really, your mindscape - feels enchanted, exactly as you want it to be.

I left this long comment a while ago under one of your videos, but I think this video specifically fits the question, so I hope you're gonna read it this time: I have this question that is really bugging me for a while and also contributed to my lack of inspiration and excitement about filming and editing. I was wondering how you plan cinematic travel vlogs when the circumstances are so very different than when you plan a specific shot for, let’s say, an ad for a client. When it comes to the latter, you know what you got, you know the utensils, the scenes, the angles - overall you have all that it takes to write a rough script of what you envision. But when it comes to travelling, it’s more of like a spontaneous thing where you literally explore new lands and I mean, it is on thing to capture still scenes and connect them to other still scenes in post, but how do you get to plan certain transitions when you have no idea what kind of shot you will connect them to? I hope you understand what I mean, but it’s just that I see all of these puzzle pieces in a travel vlog for example and I realize that you had to shape specific puzzle pieces a specific way so they would connect to other pieces, i.e. you had to end certain scenes a specific way while shooting in order to connect them to other scenes in post so it ends up being a smooth transition. I feel like this can’t be a question of post, but you had to do the precautions while filming already. So I am reaaaallly really wondering how you do it, how you, pretty much, spontaneously plan transitions that you don’t know about yet ? The only explanation I have is that you capture the same shot in different angles and specifically with different endings (e.g. pan up or down or to the side) as a precaution (which ngl would be 10 times the work lol) or that once you reach a specific location you work with what you have there, create a rough script in your mind, so you can connect the puzzle pieces of this specific location at least.

Any tips for making these videos without drone shots? I feel travel videos rely so much on them these days, that not having a drone (or traveling no drone zones) makes them feel incomplete somehow. I travel interesting places and take good photos, but have yet to commit to trying a video.
@AidinRobbins
2 жыл бұрын
I suppose it's mostly a matter of capturing footage to supplement what a drone shot would offer- drone shots are helpful for large landscapes, establishing shots, conveying vastness, driving sequences, etc. Work those into your shot list and find ways to capture them from the ground. Drone shots look great, but if your film is heavily story-driven you'll usually find them to be a small piece of the puzzle. Here are a few I've made without any drone shots: kzitem.info/news/bejne/0Xdm0I18eoOqd20 kzitem.info/news/bejne/mGtvrJOhr4Nhhn4 kzitem.info/news/bejne/mI1qqqasnIF6iW0

Man, the point you made about the location being the main character is SO true. I cringe when I see a travel video and there's a monologue about how the person chose to travel to xyz country because they were looking to learn more about themselves or some pseudo philosophical BS. Far too many of these. This is why travel filmmakers like Brandon Li and Fernweh Chronicles resonate with so many people because they tell stories from the locations themselves.

I gotta say your dedication to not geotagging is admirable. Even though you mentioned some very recognizable and famous places in your Arizona volcanoes videos, you didn’t mention any names. Also I noticed you did your research (I’m assuming) on when you can go to a particular place which I failed to do and was unable to fully visit. It’s great to see someone with talent and success not failing to maintain good standards and morales despite the allure. I’m definitely going to be using your first tip about focusing on the location as the main character. I never thought about it that way, and it’s definitely why some of my videos fall on their face because it’s about boring ole me. Cheers!

About the sixth point. I have recently revisited Malta after 3 years and I was looking forward to one specific spot I have discovered the first time there. After 3 years the place was devasted. Garbage everywhere. Polystyrene in the sea water. Fish have fled the place, so many people there. It has really hit me. I remembered the place as such an iconic place to chill and absorb positive energy. Now, such a sad dirty place.
