First, if you want harnest wind, go up. Upper than threes, with support wires. Second, to create energy from generator you almost always need 3000 rpm to 10.000 rpm. So you need transmission ratio 1:100. Also you need bigger wings, like 3 or 5 half barrels, size 200 liter. Branch lenght about 3-5 meter, vertical axle must be 2m longer and you need support wires from up and down fron it to branches. Then you get easily 1,5kW from normal car alternator. And those have regelator build-in. Normal car batteries are ok to storage this energy. Good luck!
@catboyschrody
Ай бұрын
RPM needed, power output, ratio, etc all vary on one critical element: the alternator specifications. Your advice should be avoided. Telling people "oh you need this ratio so you get all this RPM" is downright false. If you ever looked at an alternator spec sheet, you'd realize RPM becomes significantly less important. I picked up a brand new audi generator at a thrift store for $15 and the difference in power output from 1000 RPM and 2000 RPM is far greator than the difference in output from 2000 RPM to 10,000 RPM. Reference: Computer tested J&N 400-24200 alternator, brand new from Goodwill for $15 and it came with a spec sheet

@@catboyschrody RPM in normal wind generator wings is obout 20. So if you put your 2000 RPM generator there, you get nothing out. You need transmission, in big wind mills its around 1:80 to 1:120.

I don't know why I noticed, maybe I was born a skeptic or to play the "Devil's Advocate," but all the while your windmill was turning so briskly; none of the vegetation was moving in the slightest! Not the leafy plants below or the limbs, leaves, or palm fronds level with the blades nor high above it? I didn't see evidence of a fan blowing air across the blades either because it would at least seemingly have affected the movement of the surrounding vegetation also. My suspicion is that you used the generator/motor as a motor to spin your turbine. It's still solid concept and functional, leaving only the question of production and efficiency. I know you show the meter and LED's but you don't hold the camera on them long enough to clarify anything. I'm guessing you used a fan.

Very cool 😎 and interesting and most popular can do it. It will change a battery but be sure to get a discharge like a solar panel type. You will need a inverter to use the power 🔋 So where ever your at you'll have power. If you do 2 3 4 or 5 you have more power and change 2 4 6 or 8 batteries 🔋 To run bigger appliances like refrigerator or heat or AC STUFF. People can get everything they need from 250 to 600 depending. Don't let your batter level drop below 50% at maxx.. 60% is better. You can but you battery goes bad way faster. I like to do wind solar combo and if a creek or flowing water a triple threat. Water turbine, wind turbine and solar. I know people that do 2 or all 3 when possible And need no power company electric .. They spend 1K to 20k depending on needs . Just saying. Be self reliable on you alone And God of course 😊

Very good. You may put a glide cover as well to direct all the spreaded air falling on all leaves together to be directed to fall on one leaf, so it will boost the thrust to one leaf thus increase power output and an electronic voltage regulator (EVR) can give the steady regulated output. Keep it up.

I’m confused as to whether or not this is safe because normal turbines (even those similar to this one) have struggled trying to work slow enough in high winds such that it doesn’t spin out and explode. I suppose in theory this would work but on a larger scale it’s hard to say how much this specific method could cost in materials and repairs to the high speed components.

Also suspend it on its side and balance it using screws as weights. I noticed the wobble it had working at the end. This would also cause drag. Otherwise fabulous project, bravo!

What is the minimum wind speed where it will produce power? Brilliant, out of all the DIY VAWT's this is the simplest and probably the most efficient I've seen on KZitem. There's no need for welding either cos the 'L' shaped brackets could easily be bolted on!. I'm making a v similar VAWT for my balcony, using scrap plastic guttering and a motor from a Hovermower ( aka Flymower) that I got from a skip. I'm making a smaller diameter turbine cos I have to be careful the council will tell me to get rid of it. So it's a 1'' chrome plated pipe that i am attaching metal coat hangers to, to hold the 'blades'. Each 'blade' will have 2 metal coat hangers that are attached to each other top to tail, to make it easier to attach to the pole and the turbine blades. I am planning on running 3 gene's off one VAWT, 1 x 240v/300w motor and 2 x micro gene' from an old broken DVD player and the Dynamo from my pushbike I can no longer ride due to knee problems. So the big gene will hopefully power the lights in my flat( aka apartment) , and the 2 micro genes to charge my phone and run a small water pump to irrigate a vertical garden I plan on building on my balcony, also from guttering.

VAWT, compared to HAWT, are NOTORIOUSLY inefficient. They are noisier, vibrate a lot more and pose more drag. Turning on a few LED christmas tree lights is not anybody's idea of "generating electricity!" I guess it is a demonstration to show that wind energy is convertible to electrical energy but not to make any significant impact on energy production. Have you ever seen a VAWT farm of 100's of these types of turbines? It's always HAWT we see everywhere!
@johnfox2483
2 жыл бұрын
Hm ... fact is, that almost all large turbines are HAWT. Wawt ... noisier - maybe. Vibration ... why? Efficiency ... in term of blades cost ... probably. Drag ... isn't it what we want? Drag means more energy is took from the wind. What I see in VAWT is large mechanical problem with providing required strenght. Small turbines don't scale up easily to large sizes. However there are few medium size project. One was in Poland Kodun. kzitem.info/news/bejne/yJtqm3agfXiBim0 Dismantled or collapsed after few months, after strong wind.

I like the simplicity, the use of locally available material, and the overall concept. It could be easily scaled up and with a 48 to 52 volt dynamo, produce enough power to keep a large battery pack charged. Using a 4 12 volt battery pack, and a 48 volt dynamo would potentially allow you 4 different 12 volt accesses or a pair of 24 volt circuits depending on what the local standards are. This unit probably produces low amperage, but it is a start, using what looks like a sewing machine motor. It works, low amperage or high. The drive belt on a higher amperage unit might need an idler pulley to keep from slipping, but for this demo, it was not a priority. Keep on working, if it works, great, if it fails, figure out the problem and go at it again.

Great insight into the build just subscribed and it’s a nice compact turbine I also have built a homemade 650 watts wind turbine, a treadmill motor turbine and a little but powerful ametek 30v turbine and built 2 diy solar panels, be careful in high winds one of my first turbines blew up 😕and now have only 2 wonderful turbines working daily 😊it’s very satisfying watching those things working, keep up the good work buddy 👍

It is a handmade application with bicycle wheels from the Savonius rotor, invented in 1922. If you have space where there’s a lot of wind, maybe you’ll get some energy. These types of rotors are very rarely used due to their low performance, in relation to their size. The advantage is that they do not need guidance and go very well where there are gusty winds that change direction quickly. All anemometers work like this. Darrieus rotors are more efficient, but often have trouble starting. Then, they are usually combined on the same vertical axis, the two: A large Dareius and a smaller Savonius starter It is possible to build them, with two halves of drums of 200 liters. Then, they are welded vertically forming the drawing of an S. That would be a simpler, cheaper and more effective way in terms of the force generated.

The greater the speed of the alternator, the greater the output. Taking advantage of pulley ratios gives this setup a greater output

This is a workshop prototype so don't expect it to be a perfect, tested finished production unit. I admire the innovative thinking and methods used to make the unit. Details such as power output (voltage amps) can quite easily be tested and will improve considerably as the ideas are refined. Don't knock the blower. It means that he does not have to wait for the wind before doing tests...

Vertical turbines like this one have quite a significant part of the wind power canceling each other out as the wind hits the backside of each fin. If you build a case to house the turbine, with a curved front to channel the wind into a narrow opening so that the wind hits the front of each fin only, I bet you will at least double the efficiency.
@georgecarlinn6288
3 жыл бұрын
Yes but the problem would be it would work only wind is flowing in direction of slot, then one back fin would be needed to turn the slot in direction of wind 😃
@kayakmanonthego
3 жыл бұрын
@@georgecarlinn6288 The case doesn't have to be fixed in place. With a little sensor and a motor, it costs very little energy to move the case around following changes in the wind direction.

+roberto grillo, thank you very much for your kind words. I used a less efficient dynamo (its not at least a dynamo, it is a DC motor). You can equip a high efficient dynamo or even an alternator to get more output. I always prefer to make projects with materials in hand. Keep in touch. 🙌

I love watching homemade power projects like this. Combined with other sources, such as solar/PV panels and/or maybe hydro-microturbines, this could provide sustainable electricity for modern residences or businesses. Your video indicated that the maximum power output for a "VAWT" wind turbine like this would be about 12V. I'm curious about this: Is there a way to fabricate a bunch of these turbines, say, three or four, and disperse them around a residential yard and yet plug all of them into a household PV setup so that when the wind blows, the house batteries charge, and when the sun shines, the same batteries also charge? If so, what would that involve?
@newphysicist
5 жыл бұрын
We can absolutely make use of the wind blows and the sunshine at the same time if it’s intensity is adequate. And by using best dynamos we are significantly increase the turbine output too. Living off grid is my vision! Thanks for your valuable feedback. Love it

I would advise to build 6 as a minimum, to get something meaningful, if your place is windy enough. You would need a charge controller if you plan to charge a battery, and first, to measure how much power you get of your setup. Making several measurements a day and averaging, so you can see how much your charge controller will have to take. I would put them as tall as I could, and not only one. These are cheap enough to build half a dozen.
