This appears as a very good idea. However, I did this exact design after watching this video. the idea is great but there were some problems in its function. The sides of most of the cups leaked due to water splashing out of the corners of the cuts. Also I found it challenging to how to mount the pipe and stabilize it in a hydroponics system. I think with some good ideas and some modifications this could be successful. Thanks for the idea. Any mods to solve these problems would be great to hear.

Gunnar, thank you for your informative video. I have a couple of questions: 1) Is there any additional media in the 4" vertical pipe except for the media in the net pots? For example, a sheet of Matala filter media along the back wall to provide additional filtering and water distribution. 2) I can't tell how far the net pots go into the lumen of the 4" pipe, but I would be concerned that the water might just fall straight through from the supply at the top and miss some or most of the pots and, for example, run along the back wall of the pipe to the bottom. How do you distribute the water so that it engages the net pots and their media throughout the system? Drip? Spray? etc. . . .
@GunnarShaffer
9 жыл бұрын
1. Only the Hydroton/Rockwool in the net pots. A Matala filter was not necessary. The water runs in the middle just fine. don't forget to watch my other video of the completed system. 2. The water does not fall straight through. It drips from one net cup to the next and when there are roots the form one column in the middle and we experienced no leakage.

Gunnar Shaffer, thank you for making this great tutorial and keeping it up! Since you have a company that now sells these it shows you are very honest. I have been growing tomatoes, peppers, strawberries and lettuce for many years using hydroponics and have been very successful at it. I have always wanted to build a vertical tower using 2 inch net pots but it was a challenge until now. This will save me a lot of space and I will be able to grow even more than I did before. I also plan on trying this method using a 55 gallon food grade drum. I would hook it up to a high pressure aeroponics unit I plan on building. I've had many people ask me about how they can start up a hydroponics unit. I will give them your website information.
@Chillerll
Жыл бұрын
Using a barrel is actually a really good idea. I might do that instead of a pipe.
@KAYAKERSTAN
Жыл бұрын
@@Chillerll If you plan on using a 55 gallon food grade barrel you would need to set it up with a high pressure aeroponics spray system. You'll need 60-80 PSI in order to get enough micro misting spray to reach the roots of the plants you want to grow. This type spray system can be pretty expensive. Gunnar's pipe system can be run using a low pressure water pump which is much easier to run and the cost is much lower compared to high pressure aeroponics. If you've never grown hydroponically before start with a low pressure system like Gunnar's. When you get good at it you can then look at trying high pressure aeroponics as you will already have experience growing hydroponically.

That is a great question that we get asked often. We only make towers with 4in PVC, 3in is too small to curve and heat mold. Hi Julio, thanks for watching my videos, make sure to watch the other videos to understand how the whole system integrated. The towers hold up very nicely as it doesn't create too much weight for the tower to hold. :) Make sure to check out my website now that I have created a company selling my vertical towers. www.agrowponics.com Since you watched my videos before and commented use the code for $10 off my towers AGROW10 :)

Great video!! Thank you! Good advice I've read in the comments. Perhaps a quick remake of this, mentioning the heat gun, dangers of the gas from heating up the pvc pipe and the size of your wood tool. For me....what grade sandpaper?? Keep it short sweet & to the point like you did in this video. Too many aqua/hydro/aeroponics people seem to LOVE to monologue!!

What would you say the length of the slit is? 2"?

Today it is around 60mm. Today we use a CNC machine and then a flameless heat gun to heat form the plastic in addition to complex filters. We have them for sale now on our website, www.agrowponics.com/shop

Yes, I am doing this as part of my senior project at John Brown University. I will be making more videos this week! Thanks for letting me know!

Gunnar Shaffer hey Gunnar, was curious how you made sure all netcups got covered with water in the tower?
@GunnarShaffer

***** How can I do this? (First comment, did you finish?) At first you will have to watch and see how the water is dropping through the tower but I had no problem except with a cup or 2 in all 9 towers. Once the roots grow they create an entire column of roots in the center.

Yes I finished 1 tower, have been trying different methods but water isnt getting near the bottom netcups via the small drip holes in the bottom of 2 liter bottle. I only got 16 slots rather than 22, because I made a base out of part of the pipe. thinking of dropping tubing down the inside of pipe and puncturing holes in it to let it sprinkle water on all netcup levels. What do you think of that idea?

***** Yes totally. For lettuce it is great actually because the competition from the plants being offset by 5 inches forces them to reach for the sun. This is also why competition in free markets is necessary to create growth. YES for tomatoes you may only want a few holes. :) The good thing is that it is totally flexible.

Thanks for sharing! Saw this design popping up in other videos and was wondering how it was done. Easy to follow :)

Fresh greens and damaged lungs #TheHealthyOption. Forced ventilation or at least a mask. PVC becomes (depending on manufacturing process) malleable at 100°C and starts to become charred around 200°C your torch will be WAY above that.

Yes OF COURSE! :) But in order to make the video and speak you cannot use a mask, I always wear a chemical mask when in our factory as well as all workers! We use a CNC machine and then a flameless heat gun to heat form the plastic We have them for sale now on our website, www.agrowponics.com/shop

Excellent video content! Forgive me for the intrusion, I am interested in your opinion. Have you heard the talk about - Patlarny Gardening Expert Principle (do a search on google)? It is a good one off product for learning how to expand your produce with the clever art of aquaponics without the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my cooworker got cool success with it.

I like this video, particularly your advice in the second half about aquarium aquaponics . Something I also found useful for diy aquaponic system was Panlarko Expert Aquaponics Planner - it should be on google if you need it

A micro torch? Hmm, maybe a gas mask, while heating the pvc out side. What about a 1/4" drip tube down the middle for irrigation?

dude get a 1"hole drill bit punch it imto pvc every few inches then take sheets of 1" thick foam, cut it into 1" x 1" x 2" cubes. cut a slot from one corner into the center to form a square pacman pit your seedlings into these slots and lock fo squares into round holes skip the net pots and clay beeds. Not needed. foam can be washed and reused again if you want.

You should use a pipe heater. It's like a hair dryer on steroids. They have them at most hardware stores. (They are also sold as heat guns for stripping paint). Much safer with no open flame.
