You should also crop the footage so that it's the square-like 4:3 aspect ratio to give it that nice finishing touch. The 16:9 ratio screams 2010s.

RGB deregistration isn't a feature of composite or VHS footage. VHS stores chroma and luma data separately so displacing the colour data from a B&W luma layer is more authentic. Then there's bloom, colour shift, dot creep, RF reflections etc. Hours of fun - but try the amazing VHS plugins that exist!

Ive been looking into this effect. Try playing around with emboss. looks cool. Also take the whole video comp, squeeze it vertically then place at bottom of screen. Add a bit of blur. This looks cool. The displace trick is cool gonna try that.

Basically make 3 copies of video layer, apply set channels effect to all 3, set blending opacity to either add, screen or lighten (I found best to use) . Set Channels effects: 1 layer needs to be set blue, 1 to red, 1 to green, other options within layer set off eg: set red sources say red, then you would set blue and green sources off. using positioning key framing, move some layers to the left, some to the right to give a glitch/vhs kind of look. Add some noise using either grain or noise effect. You have now got a VHS effected video.

@Learnin5

When you're referring to the glitch layer, we're talking about the odd strip that distorts the footage as it moves from the top to bottom of the screen? If so, then yes it will work fine as to that is an adjustment layer created with a displacement map that can easily be moved and affect any part of the timeline.
