Thanks for sharing. John Amoss made a good post titled "Happiness is a Wet, Smooth Block". Planing, card scraping, is really only flat when dry, which is ok for keyblocks and flat ukiyo-e colors. Flat when wood is actually wet results in some quite beautifully smooth gradations. The majority of blocks made today for publishers are made by Woodlike Matsumura and made this way. This works equally well with Japanese or N American cherry.

Thanks for the comment! So does that mean John Amoss typically sands his blocks wet? Or is it possible to finish them using some other method while wet?

@@MoranetzMakes @JohnAmoss I'm not sure what John does exactly. I guess you might plane wet instead. Just as messy as sanding wet. I lean toward sanding because the smoothest blocks I've prepped were wet sanded. Modern cherry from Woodlike also seems much smoother than on areas of vintage cherry that were never printed on and would have been prepped with planes. Woodlike also seems to do a final polish with camellia oil(?)

John, thanks for the video. I was trying to figure out hoe I was going to do my blocks this weekend.

Another great video. Could we get one on sharpening our carving tools? Thanks! Also, in a previous comment I asked about using chemicals to transfer a printed image onto wood, and I have to say it works excellently. Look into laser print transfer with Xylene, it's super effortless.

Thank you! And that’s a good idea, I can try to include that in one of my future videos. I am by no means an expert with it, but I have gotten by so far. Glad to hear the transfer experiment went well for you, thanks for letting me know!

Just curious, you carve both sides of these blocks?

Why do you have to make your own plywood. Why not a solid piece of wood?

Good question- solid wood is great but over time it can warp (making it difficult to print). Using a plywood with thick cherry gives the feel of carving solid wood but resists warp.

Youre brave, using wood glue in a carpeted room 😂

Now that you say it… that was probably not a good idea 😅
