I've been using wooden squares for several years now, and I really like them. There have been several articles on making them in Popular woodworking in the last few years, one by Adam Cherubini and one by Chris Schwarz. The two articles were about squares of slightly different proportions (Adam's were based on English designs, while Chris' was based on a French design), but they're still both try squares and still both designed to do the same task; layout and check your work for square. My squares are based more on the French proportion (approx. 2:3), but I make them in different sizes to suit my needs. You can too, even if you don't already own a square. Here's how I make them.
