Couple things: Several have mentioned you can permalink directly to github files: www.reddit.com/r/gamedev/comments/i6mv0c/how_to_make_an_actually_good_tutorial/g0x7uhu This is a great idea idk why I didn't think to do this before. Bunch of people have said putting the length of the video in the title is redundant. I disagree; 99% of videos titled something like "How to Make A First Person Shooter in Unity" are just a 10 minute intro to a 300 part series. The worst of these are when you're trying to watch a tutorial on how to *fix* something. Usually in that kind of situation I'm stressed out and impatient already. Clicking a tutorial in that state and hearing "Alright guys I'm back with another tutorial today, seems like you all liked the last one. If you didn't watch it feel free to go check it out. I don't have time to scrub through your video to figure out where you start explaining the concepts, and I certainly don't want to have to continually pause, rewind, and fast forward if your pacing doesn't match mine. Just write an article that I can read and comprehend at my leisure. I've found that in the relentless pursuit of not wasting people's time, videos end up quite short and acquire less watch time than videos that do waste time, leading to algorithmic preference for the time wasting videos about 75% of the time. Some of them do end up doing well in search, but they have to be much more compelling than the competition to rank well in search results. I still make short, to-the-point videos, partially because I stubbornly resist being guided by algorithms, but because it's what I would actually want to find if I was looking for a solution, and I feel like that was conveyed well here without outright saying it. Whenever I look up how to do something and am met with a shit tutorial explaining how to do it (and I'm not on client time) I always remake it into a one minute version. This is an easy way to get KZitem views, because people who are googling for answers will always click the shortest video. One thing I wish people would do is write out every step of what you're doing in the video's description. So that way if the person is confused, or doesn't like your time length, they can just read the description and get on with it. The problem is KZitem rewards content of a certain length, not the most satisfactory answer to your search query, or the most concisely conveyed information. A video website with google's search algorithm rather than youtube's would be mankind's greatest contribution to poetry.

everybody online needs to see this video, regardless of what you make tutorials on. they way you make your tutorials is the definition of efficiency.

Man you're a real one. Another thing that REALLY pisses me off is when programmers don't or outright refuse to share the code "so no one can plagiarize it", really? why make the tutorial in the first place then? trust me if a student is desperate enough they can stop the video and copy the entire thing. I need the tangible code not only to read it thoroughly at my own pace but so I can personally BUILD & TEST IT before I decide it's a working solution for me, and so I can REFER BACK to it at my own convenience, I don't have the time nor patience to watch your "tutorial" again and again.

We need more people doing tutorials like this guy, concise, practiced, and to the point without embellishing or going into minute details about irrelevant things. I wish he'd made an rpg tutorial which is what I'm trying to find good examples of, and what led me here at all.

"in x amount of time" is redundant because you can see the video length.
@tissuepaper9962

Unless, get this, you've cut out boring/repetitive/tedious/time-consuming tasks, meaning the length of the video doesn't accurately represent how long it takes to do the thing, see: most tutorials.

@@tissuepaper9962 If I see a video that says "...x in 10 minutes". I'll assume they mean that they can teach me how to do x in 10 minutes, not that the process itself takes 10 minutes.

That's why I just screen record, show text and have music. No talking necessary. Maybe when my channel gets bigger and I get more confident, then I will explain things better. I will probably need a script, because I'm not a naturally great speaker. haha

Honestly one of the 1st videos where I paused and subscribed midvid. You really summed up your thoughts and delivered it in a funny compelling way that as you say made me want to stay! Well done you. Quick question: Do you use a script and if so do you riff off of points or is everything written out. The fact we can't tell is a testament to your prep work.

In the Motion Design and Cinema 4D community a great example for this is Jonathan Winbush. His tutorials are quick and straight to the point no bs. He is also close to releasing his new course and as a long time subscriber i'm really happy for him. This sounds like a plug but it's not. Feel free to delete if not allowed.

I have no context into your channel or even what you do on KZitem, but this is great and really needs to be pushed everywhere to a lot of communities. For example, if you try to find a video with step by step instructions to set up Retroarch on a PC, good luck. They are all So. Bad. Great work with this. Seriously, it applies to many different things. Unboxing videos too!

I totally agree. I recently started making tutorials and everyone suggested the usual 1min of *nothing* at the beginning of the video, subscribe, logo, brand, who am I, why am I here, can you trust me, why to trust me... basically NOTHING the viewer is intereste in, feels like all the popups that are now back on the websites asking to subscribe before I've actually seen what should I subscribe to. I guess it is working, but man it is annoying
