In today’s video I’m going to show you how to make this super cheap air purifier for your home or work space. To keep yourself healthy, this air purifier will keep your air clean of dust, pollen, and could even filter out germs. Whether you work with wood or metal, it’s impossible to keep the shop clean. The amount of dust that builds up in an unventilated space will surprise you after a couple hours of work.
In order to make this air purifier, you will need a 20” X 20” box fan. I picked mine up at a local store for about $20. Next, go to your local hardware store and get a 20” X 20” X 1” air filter. This cost me under $5. These are categorized by MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. The filter that I’m using is classified as a MERV 8, which is good for dust, pollen, pet dander, and debris. Depending on your purpose for building this, you can go up to a MERV 13 which will filter all of the things previously mentioned plus things like mold spores, tobacco smoke, and bacteria. For my purpose I only need to filter out airborne dust.
When installing the filter make sure you pay attention to the air flow direction. Put it on the back of the fan so the air sucks through the filter and blows out clean air. And it's as simple as taping it onto the fan. It really couldn’t be easier. You can use zip ties or duct tape. I originally was going tape the entire perimeter of the fan to prevent air from seeping through the corners, but when I tested it out, the air really didn’t feel like it was moving at the corners. When you start it up, you will notice the filter flexes as its sucked toward the fan. This is great because you don't want the air to get around the filter, you want it to go through.
This fan is perfect for the shop and/or home. Plug it in, turn it on, and enjoy the clean air, along with the clean shop. The first time using this, I was absolutely surprised by how little dust was all over my shop and how much the filter captured. I love this because it’s a “set and forget” item that I wish I had a long time ago. You know it works by the ring of dirt captured in the filter. I encourage everyone who stays in a dust-filled environment to make one - it’s so nice not needing to wear a respirator just to stand in my shop. This air purifier is just so easy, effective, and economic that you might as well have it around.
