Want to make your hair stand on end? Make a Van De Graaff generator! Michael has a quick rundown of his generator build and how you can make one yourself.
two things that might improve things for you. The first is using either a clear, lucite (plexiglas) tube or a white (rather than black) pipe. The black PVC typically uses carbon as a colorant: this makes it somewhat conductive. The other is to use a bottom charge sprayer. By adding a source of energy at the bottom roller, you can actually increase your surface charge at the top. Finally, some of your readers might be having problems keeping the nylon belt centered on the bottom roller. The point that might be missed here is that the lower nylon roller must be convex which makes that roller self-centering. If it isn't convex, it will be difficult to keep the belt centered. Great job. I hadn't thought of using a smaller bowl to act as a coupler to the larger, intact sphere. Very clever! Thanks for sharing this. Doug

Got some questions. What if I want to use 2 big Ikea bowls and not make a hole in one of them. Is the hole necessary or can I just connect the top roler brush to the exterior of the bowl? Should the top roler be stationary or rotative as the bottom one? And should the bottom roler be from a different material from the top one? Thanks.

@@alexradac589 You can, but then the brush might leak electrons before they can be contained into the dome. It wont be as efficient in other words. (Also the ikea bowls might be too thick, but worst case trial and error!)

Common mistake. The nylon pantyhose (+30 on the triboelectric scale) and PVC (-100) top roller are a good combo. Just don't make the common mistake of calling it FRICTIONAL electricity. (Antique term that really is not all that accurate.) It is more technically called pressure or contact electricity. Put some bearings on that PVC roller to keep from wearing out belts unnecessarily, as the pressure of the belt is sufficient. If you want to increase the output dramatically, wrap the PVC roller in Teflon (-190) pipe thread tape. Another tweak would be to get rid of the pantyhose grip on the bottom roller and coat it with expanding Polyurethane (+60) foam. Doing so will give you a double whammy on your belt charge efficiency while providing a good grip. The bottom brush is just to equalize belt charge since the top brush stripped free electrons from the system.

@@PinkeySuavo contact electricity is electrons that are transferred from one material to another due to contact. Generated electricity happens when electrons are forced into motion by a moving magnetic field. Yes, I am building this contraption. I have the two Ikea bowls. I also purchased a smaller bowl to use as a base for the two Ikea bowls. Just seemed like a better way to dismantle it for storage. finding a bed roller was not easy. (I dislike making online purchase) But found one at Ace Hardware. The De-soldering braid was not easy to find as well. For a motor, I am using a power drill. (I do not have any motors on hand.) I did glue a single layer of panty hose to the bed roller. I now just need to install the pantyhose belt and then it will be time for a test run.

Very impressive output. He's got around 400Kvdc worth of output from just a nylon belt!! An improvement on this generator uses a length of polyethylene belt material and spaced out foil tape sections with about a 1.5 cm gap in between the foil sections. The bottom of the generator is then connected to a small 10Kvdc charge sprayer. This can be made by a small plate charger coil from a Xerox copier or laser printer or alternatively a car ignition coil run on 6-8Vdc will work. With this improvement you've made a pelletron generator. these can easily overcome the humidity in the air. Word of caution: When playing around with Van De Graaf generators/ pelletrons / other electrostatic generators, understand that the larger the toroid (top terminal) the greater the output potential in Kv and greater the current. A gigantic professional salad bowl or mixing bowl (available in China town or some Korean food stores for making large quantities of Kimjang/ winter kimchi) ~35" across can build up nearly 1MV worth of charge ( 1,000,000 V). There will be enough current to do damage! If you decide to make one, do so carefully. IF you do build one you'll also need to make sure that your charge belt also increases in size. -----> for Pontus Welin Van De graaff generators are potentially useful for charge spraying plants (water droplets/ fungicides/ pesticide stick to plants because of charge), power coating non metallic objects.... the list goes on. They are also useful in desktop particle accelerators for generating small interactions between heavy atoms and high energy electrons/ other subatomic particles.
@meagain2222

actually no the sparks are just such a high voltage dc they jump the gap. It repeats the spark after enough charge rebuilds on the sphere. The sphere is acting as a high voltage capacitor. The voltage will just keep rising until the charge leaks off as fast as its being created.

The belt rotates smoothly but it is exposed to open air i.e. there is no tube or pipe in which the System rotates. The upper roller is a piece of PVC that actually remains stationary and the belt and the bottom roller are made of Nylon pantyhose. The motor is 500 rpm. The pantyhose rubs against the PVC creating friction which is the most reliable way to create charge. I have a good grounding too. Initially i had a stainless steel top load in the form of a SINGLE hollow hemisphere which only gave me sparks of the length 7-8 mm. Then i used two mild steel hollow hemispheres which were much larger in area and greater in thickness but had a bit of dust and rust on them which i tried to clean with a wet cloth. This gave me sparks of length 12-13 mm. The entire structure stands almost more than a meter tall and should give me a great charge and sparks of length at least 8-10 cm. Where am i going wrong? What should i do to get a much higher voltage? Please help me out. Thank You. :)
