I think laws limiting power are foolish. It outlaws bikes that would have the power to climb hills easily.. which is one of the main reasons people buy ebikes. If the assisted top speed is limited, which I think is more reasonable, then what does it matter if I have 1500W or 250W? It should be about speed and weight of the bike, not power. This also applies to the silly laws banning throttles. What does it matter if I activate my motor using my wrist/ thumb rather than my feet?
@lmaoroflcopter
2 жыл бұрын
On the throttle front it's not technically a restriction. It's a loophole, e-bike manufacturers are taking advantage of. With a throttle - motorbike. Without one - can't possibly be a motorbike as it has no throttle. Hence why the new classifications and laws as there were no regulations that previously regulated such things.

This is very off-putting for a new starter on an Ebike. I think I will continue destroying the climate with my combustion engine car rather than going through all this hassle. So sad that on one hand the authorities are saying , Get electric vehicles, it is safer for the climate, and same time they have such silly hurdles, which I can understand is necessary for your kind of bike, but for an ebike, perhaps even with 350 Watts, it is very off-putting. Very Very disappointed with the fact that the law makers just don't have enough brains when they come up with such rules. I mean, I have seen road bikes, where people are riding almost at 30 mph on their pedals only... how do these law makers justify that ? It just don't make sense to me. Besides that, thank you for taking time to share your experience of this REGISTRATION process. It is definitely helpful for the relevant parties.
@Kumari_44

Well said. With leg power alone you can get to around 30mph if youre fit enough and you so chose to. Yet they restrict you to a 250w motor that can only reach about 17mph max because they think anything more is dangerous… HELLOOO GOVERNMENT! What part of *’we can do 30mph with our legs alone, without any electric assistance’* did you not understand!? The level of danger hasnt changed! therefore the restriction makes no sense.
@lmaoroflcopter
2 жыл бұрын
@@Kumari_44 Because if you can do 30mph with your legs, then you don't need more. The motor is there to assist you. Not replace you on an e-bike. And I'd challenge anyone to maintain 30mph on the flat, through pedals for a full minute, let alone a full journey that isn't an athlete.

Also all lights can be removed for an MOT so I guess they have to be on there for the MVSA and then you can take them all off. It's called a daylight only MOT. VOSA should write a separate booklet for Mopeds and Motorcyles and cars. Make it easier for people to know what they have to do. Great series of videos this MVSA set is, THANK YOU very much. Thank you Andy. Now a hybrid cycle with a basic 750 watt Bafang mid drive conversion should have this registration, but is it practical? I think the community needs to pressure the government or DVlA to give us a class between a pure pedelec and an electric moped. The current regulations simply do not cover the circumstances of anybody needing an e-cycle that can actually safely climb a 1 in 5 gradient. This fine for people living in nearly flat cities, but leaves the hill country dwellers out in the cold. In the meantime, I must just remeber to stick to 15 mph if ever the law could see me or actually restrict the Bafang control to 15 mph. If even a DVLA inspector has to just take your word for the maximum power, perhaps I should now breath easy?

I experimented with the "speed limit" option in the display menu, but it doesn't seem to do anything. The motor does not deactivate at any speed of the back wheel, whether the thing is set to 99km/h or lower than 25km/h. Geared tall enough (52/11) I've had the full "1200w" on the display at 45 mph down a hill pressing the thumb accelerator all the way.
@myobboy9973
3 жыл бұрын
@@TimpBizkit The one I built for my son was 750 nominal, but also gave 1200 in acceleration. But this one did cut out the urge at the selected speed. Unfortuately, all we need is for some high profile person like an MP or something to be killed in an accident riding on one and then it will all be over for high power home built e-bikes in Europe and the UK. Hence I would urge the e-bike community to ask for a new legal slot between moped and pedelec. If you buy a new control unit it will probably work fine. With the latest controller set to 15 mph and step three of nine, the Bafung 750 rides exactly the same as a pedelc but the thumb throttle should also be removed for legal reasons. The 1200 watts is just what one needs for climbing 1 in 8 gradients of course.

Yeah it would be easier to buy a 125 and convert it. The advantages of a small moped class bike is they are light and the power to weight ratio is crazy. There’s mopeds around here doing 40, you wouldn’t wanna go faster than that on a bicycle frame really.

In my opinion I would not bother with it being registered as a moped if it is only allowed to do 28 mph. In the U.S. an e-bike does not have to be registered as long as you are pedaling up to 28 mph. Technically you are on thin ice if you get pulled over doing 40 mph. I think you would be better off if you register it as a motorcycle.

Britain is very different to America, 30mph is adequate for many more roads here especially the type you'd use for shorter trips. That said for what this bike is probably capable of I agree that it would be a good idea to register it as an A1 motorcycle, the licencing requirements are the same (except for age), depending on how much more work was involved. One thing I'm not sure about is whether a motorcycle can still be propelled by pedals.
