Hi, how heavy is your flying wing? I am trying to do similar (changed a bit wing shape and method of covering), but I am curious if it is not getting too heavy.
@Joyplanes
5 жыл бұрын
The wing without electronics is 250gr, electronics will add about 400gr depending on the battery.
@ksaweer
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for answer! I thought that my is heavy as a stone - I noticed that glue that I mounted wooden reinforcement with adds much weight, so started counting every gram. Each raw styrofoam part of the wing was only 40gg, but both glued together with wooden "griders" added, but still without covering, became surprisingly 170g heavy. When removed wood and glue both styrofoam parts connected together were only around 100g. Second version was about 150g before covering.

Nice! Winglets are more efficient and stable than fins, it seems that your wing CG was a bit too backwarded, this is why the wing flew better without the winglets (it pushed CG forwards).

My thoughts exactly. Try lighter winglets and add some nose weight such as a bigger battery.
@theopinioness3010

@@MelindaGreen Totally agree. I have an RC wing and had exactly the same instability until I moved the CG forward by adding weight to the nose. Then it flew like a dream, soaring with the birds of prey...
@hunterjohnson7393
4 жыл бұрын
I disagree. With the large fins, crosswinds caused the vehicle to yaw excessively, particularly given their distance from the CG. Eliminating these caused any directional stability to be provided by the winglets, which were closer to the CG and much less prone to causing yaw issues.
@larrywhalen596

@@MelindaGreen Hi, by increasing the size of the battery a lot of weight is put into play which then starts the process of playing with pinpointing the C/G all over again; to which my solution has been to either use small, round fishing weights such as what is known as split-shot, or either "bird shot" from a shotgun shell which can be purchased through a gun store or the internet and is much more precise when balancing your model, especially a "wing" or a "Delta" type aircraft and is why a small plastic ballast box is necessary to have built into the nose of the plane to assist in this process.
@MelindaGreen
2 жыл бұрын
@@larrywhalen596 You can calculate exactly where the CG should be. Here's a lovely CG calculator I use with all the parameters in the URL: fwcg.3dzone.dk/?wing_span=48&root_chord=14.5&tip_chord=9.5&sweep_type=0&sweep=11&cg_pos=22.1 Then it's a simple matter of drawing a line on the bottom of your plane where the CG should go, then placing it on a stand while you adjust the weights to make it balance there and you're good to go!

Nice job no 3d printer needed. If you want to keep it lighter move the battery and motor forward and do not use heavy glue or paint especially on the back or aft 2/3rds of the wing. 3M 777 is heavy when over applied but helps your tape stick very well. Use two bright contrasting colors to help you orientate it from a distance. Take the motor off add some nose weight look up slope soaring go back to that beach and the mountains you were at and properly fly those spots as any self respecting wing glider flyer should. In the wind and with out the motor for belly laughs try combat slope soaring with your foamy. Wind should =altitude = fun. If it does not penetrate the wind add more wait on the CG line until it does. With just a 250ma battery you could fly for 2or 3 hours straight no motor or 3d printer needed.IMO good luck to you.

It's flying tail heavy,add nose weight,will make it glide better and fly faster plus yours is underpowered,you need at least a 2208-2400kv up to 2212-3000kv or more,and 3-4S 1500-2200mah LiPo,it's best to center the battery front to back to keep as much weight at the wing root as possible and just add weight to the nose to balance it.

Oh... One question about the use of the fpv: how do you power the camera and VTX? Do you use a bec connected directly to the battery, or do you power it from the receiver?
@Joyplanes
7 жыл бұрын
The camera is 5V so I connect it to the receiver, the VTX stands up to 24v so I connected it to the battery, if the VTX is not capable of high voltage, then use a buck converter or any BEC, all is powered from the same battery, if you want no noise at all in your video use a separate battery to power the FPV system, but it's heavier.

Joyplanes Nice, thanks! I bought an all in one camera + VTX, because I want to be able to use it in mini quads too. And it work from 3.2v up to 5.5v. So I think a buck converter and a good capacitor are going to work well. :)

Good work. One issue is your control surface design. The chord is longer near the middle of the plane compared to the outside, this leads to non-axial rolls, less efficiency at cruse/high speed and poorer handling at lower speeds. Put the widest section of the control surface out wide and far back for best results on roll and elevator.

NOFPV: This is a very good tip for any airship with ailerons; although not asthetically appealing as it would look with a 'straight' trailing edge for the ailerons it is much more, (highly) efficient ! And with the vertical 'winglets' set with the rear of the fin at 1.0° to 1.5° inboard they will direct more air over the outboard tips of the ailerons, which in turn results in a higher degree of response, and does Not create enough drag to be concerned with due to the performance gained by doing this one technique alone. I've been flying R/C's since the summer of '76 and bought my first 'Wing', (Bill Evan's Saracen), when it first came out in kit form so have managed to glean a lot of valuable information over the last forty-six years. For me it is easier to bite the bullet and buy a set of precut foam wings than to cut them especially when you can be flying in a few hours - plus this type of wing is as close to being 'bullet-proof- as one can get, Especially when a 1/8" by 3/8" spruce sub-spar is incorporated into the leading edge which protects your plane from damage during a midair and have literally 'flown completely though' a few other aircraft's fuselage or wing during a violent midair collision - and kept flying until it was retrieved.
