I used your design to build a roof for my cupola. Even with your help, I found it to be challenging, but it turned out great. Thanks for taking the time to document this project!

In my 40's, yes I would make it. But, now at 70, no I wouldn't. A man MUST know and honor to his limitations. Getting it on the barn would be my problem. Good build. Thanks

Awesome! (Place ladder on the low end of the roof so your ladder extends above the roof line. Then walk the pieces to the top of the roof. Much safer.)

Looks great. In the future use a rope to pull items onto the roof. Place the item leaned up on the rails of the ladder and then pull it up with the rope. It is safer and the the ladder keeps it off the side of the building and you can use the low side of the roof as well because the ladder will guild the item over the eve and gutter. Be safe.

Thank you! I am making a cupola for a friend and have watched your videos over and over because we are going to put it up in parts as you did. As I took good old paper and pencil to do drawings I noticed the lack of explanation of the how to cut bottom 2x4s to the base under the feet. You went straight to the cube? None the less I can see by stopping the videos and studying the photo. So thank you again!

My next major project will likely be a fairly complex coffee table for my daughter. It's complicated enough that I'll have to draw it up ahead of time, which is something that I don't usually do. In the meantime, I have a whole bunch of boxes to make this week for a craft fair that I'll be at next weekend. I'm going to be really busy for the next week!

Looks very nice. My favorite part of the entire build is the truth that it took way longer than expected and that you spent 12 hours on the install. I think video editing can create misleading perceptions on how long a task really takes which lead to us getting frustrated that it takes us a long time to do something, when in reality that isn't really unexpected. Great project!

Excellent, excellent job. I came here whether to decide to "build" or "buy" a cupola for my barn. Buy it is!! :) And to echo someone below, the ladder work made me REAL nervous (being a firefighter and all). Why didn't you access the roof from the low side where you could get a few rungs over the roofline??

Excellent job. My only critique would be the shingle overlapping at the corners. One layer overlap is ok, but the number you had make the corners extremely thick and add to the chance the wind along with rain will work under the layers of shingles. One question. After all that work and time, why wasn’t the roof vent cut? The cupola would seem to be the ideal unit to allow the heat and moisture that accumulates at the peak to be released thru the vent.
@Woodumakeit
4 жыл бұрын
I wanted to cut a roof vent, but this was for a couple in their 80s who wanted it only for decoration since the barn is empty and unused. It would be easy to cut the vent from below if the need ever arises.

Beautiful project and I would like to build it too. I have watched it over and over and understood all the length and width decisions/measurements, but how did you decide on the height dimensions to match the proportions of your barn?

I seem to recall that I just sketched it out on a piece of paper and came up with a height that looked proportionally correct. Nothing more sophisticated than that.

It took a couple of months for my neighbor to receive his flag form the Navy, and then he decided he did not want to have a triangluar frame around it, so that was pretty much the end of the project. Okay, I'm confused. Cupolas are for providing air ventilation, yet an opening on the roof was not provided for it to function as a real cupola. Why all the effort to make one with louvers and all and yet its only there for decoration?
@Woodumakeit
6 жыл бұрын
Two reasons, I guess. I wanted it to look authentic, and I wanted the owner to be able to use it as a functional cupola if they ever decided to return to using the barn for horses. All they'd need to do is cut an opening in the roof under where the cupola sits.

No overhang on roof??? no angle flashing ? If you are doing it wriong why not go overboard plugging screws. Why is there a camera on them. NO one can see them on the ground. You can use outdoor non stain screws. It would have been labor and >$700 online. But it is useless. NO cut into roof so it is not a vent.
@jeffmurdock8321
20 күн бұрын
Would I make it? No. From a practical standpoint it seems you made a lot of work for yourself -- and took on a lot of risk climbing on a rooftop for a day -- building something that has no function. Yet from now forward it will require a lot of maintenance while also adding the additional risk and liability of potential roof leaks. It looks nice tho.
