so for the last couple of years I've been toying with a similar idea, I did not want to risk spending money on materials I couldn't afford especially with looming cons and everything I was focusing on at the time on top of the arthritis in my hands affecting my ability to do heavy tasks such as carving foam. I am SO glad you put this video because I've been able to sit down and figure out what my best option is for my dragon born going forward. I have thousands of sketches trying to figure out motion with just so many numbers all of the place and even some 3d motion renderings some where on my google drive. THANK YOU!!!!!

this is the same method they used in old movies for making such tails back then they made the entire core one material however, so instead of sections just one plastic or foam like center and then some washers running through it with some rings on the ends. then some ropes through it fixed at the end and going through the holes a the ends of the washers(so they had some distance from the center of the tail). and then to the motor to controll it each side had one wire. make one longer and one shorter and the tail moves to one side, the opposite to the other side, etc.

Why not limit the movement by using set-lenght thread? First decide on the maximum curvature you want, then use a thread and tie the two ends to the two adjacent sections. Repeat for each pair of sections, on both sides. That's my first thought, dunno if it might work but if anyone tries it let me know.

Maybe you could try a 3in foam base and add 1inch foam on each side and cut it into a cone shape. After that cut 1 inch wide slits into the tail to make sections. I've seen this method used a lot and I think it would help you too, and While your tails work fine as they are, i noticed that the sections are a little too far apart and thats why they move too much to the sides. Im not trying to discourage you im just trying to help and critique, you can use this info or discard it but which ever you choose, I hope you have a nice day or night.

This was a lockdown project and I didn't have much foam (hence the fabric technique) but if I ever get to make another tail I'll be sure to try no materials.
