I hate to be the one to burst the bubble, but you can do this entire workflow within QGIS very quickly and without Blender. _And all your data stays as spatial data layers._ Using Blender in this way you lose the georeferencing so is of very limited use other than a pretty map. It becomes very cumbersome to then add other data like OSM layers with labels. All you need to do is the following: 1. generate a Hillshade tif from your clipped DEM tif (Note: I use the ALOS30 free data all the time, clipped and reprojected per project) 2. move your DEM layer to immediately above the Hillshade layer 3. set your DEM layer as "single band pseudocolor" with whatever colour ramp looks good, and set the layer rendering mode to "Multiply". 4. tweak the sun's position, contrast, and transparency as required. 5. Profit.

I don't think there is a bubble to burst, just different workflows with preferred software. If you have a different workflow fully in QGIS we would enjoy a tutorial on how to do it. Would you like to give a talk in the next QGIS open day?

@@qgishome Thanks, but this is so simple I don't think it requires much of a tutorial. Just the 4 steps as mentioned above should be sufficient.

@@smartphonearena7770 Yes. I've been making map backgrounds this way for years, either in QGIS and in Arc. I'm surprised so few people know about it.

@@oodlesofnoodles4660 Definetly not true, mr Bubble. I can remember much trouble with the clipping function in qgis 2 years ago. Maybe its better now. Fyi, its not "Hillshade". Anyway ---> "tweak the sun's position, contrast, and transparency as required." ??? render in qgis? Where can i find the render engine? I wouldnt be surprised when there isnt any. When you really assume everyone knows these things by birth, you havent understand the sense of tutorials.
