I’m so glad to finally see you make a video. I understand getting burned out making videos, I used to maintain a Corvette club website that documented a lot of activities. Sometimes making an update that included a lot of new material was very hard to get enthusiastic about doing it. Regarding brake lines, or pipes. In my experience here in the USA, the double flares are standard, everywhere. Even my 50s XK120 Jaguar used double flares. And yes, double flares require a special flaring tool. Cheers!

got quoted £130 for two brake pipes at MOT few years ago. bought that exact same flaring tool and the other bits you used and did it for £55 all in. i bought that tool in 2014 and it came with sph1 and sph2 fitting to make single and double flares cracking wee tool that is though. great video, good to see ya back

Hello James hope you enjoyed your break and raring to go on your projects. I am a Plumber you can buy those cutting wheels at most Plumbing stores but also you can get a little bending machine to re-create those tight bends. Takes a little practice but I'm sure a man with your skills can manage that. Saying that though you made quite a tidy job of your pipes doing them by hand. The benefit of a bending machine is it makes a nice neat bend great when you are in a tight space or where the bends are visible. Like in the engine bay. I have a sykes tool for forming the flares and the same ones that you have they are handy when you have to make new ends on the pipe in situ. Anyway another great video and looking forward to seeing more.

If you don't have a piper straightner or bending tool, The former can be done with some padding inside a suitable diameter steel piper which works pretty well, and the latter you can use tin cans to help prevent kinks but for 90 degree bends you're still better off using a bending/shaping tool. They're not that expensive to acquire and if they can save a lot of money if you don't want the risk of kinks and having to redo the line. Copper nickel is also highly recommended, mostly because it lasts longer and easier to form.

Nice having you back. I have the same setup for brakelines, but I´ve added a small handheld tube bender tool and a deburring tool. I prefer to remove the edges after the cut and also bend my pipes with a bender to avoid any collapse. I´ve also been told that cars with ABS should use copper-nickel tubes. Pure copper lines will not like the shocks of the ABS-pump over time. I have not tried out this theory, and played safe with CuNi tubes. I have also found the Sealey pressure bleeder, but not tested it out yet. It has a capacity for about 2 litres, so you can bleed for quite a while before the reservoir runs empty. Looking forward for the followup vids. 🙂

Another way out of the male/female connector problem is put male flare on each pipe and join them with a double female connector, I did this on my 02 volvo V70 recently. The flaring tools you have look very similar to the Sykes-pickavant one in my shed, probably made by the same company.

The line end is called DIN or ISO bubble flare. Most cars use inverted double flare. Make sure you buy the matching nuts for your car.
@nicam49
Ай бұрын
I have to disagree there! All modern European and US cars now use DIN flares. SAE flares went out with the ark (apparently)
@d46512
Ай бұрын
@@nicam49 this is not true. You can’t assume that you have the right fitting. They look very similar . DIN vs SAE depends on the manufacturer. Anyone watching this video probably does not have a brand new car.

@twoshedsjackson6478

Remember, if you use copper brake pipe, you can't keep bending it in the same spot, it will "work harden" and may break. Kunifer pipe is better from this point of view.

Just to be clear, at 24:42 it is a bubble flare, then at 24:55 is a double flare, for the single flare you have the tool, but did not see you make one. As for the the second tool you bought, one end is for a bubble flare or prepare for double flare, and the other end is either single flare, or to close the bubble flare and make it into double flare. Otherwise good demo !!!
