This was a fun and really quick build, A co-worker brought a puzzle into the office since I have been creating a handful recently.
I took one look and thought... I can make that. He called it a Cherry Tree Puzzle.
To start things off I bought the 4 maple balls from a local hardwood store.
Three of the balls have a hole drilled all the way through them
One is a solid wood ball.
I turned a chunk of maple into a cylinder on the lathe about 50mm in diameter sanding it to 320 grit, after cutting a 1cm cookie off I marked for 3 5/16th holes 3:50.
I used 3 sections of paracord, one at 16cm and two at 30cm these lengths do not need to be exact.
I drilled a 7/36th hole halfway through the solid ball.
Taking one of the 30cm paracord pieces and the solid ball with the 7/36tth hole I glued both ends inside the hole giving me a loop with a ball on the end 10:58.
Next, I then drilled a 7/36th hole in the last remaining ball with the existing hole making sure not to go all the way through.
Now take the shorter 16cm paracord piece and pass it through one of the holes in the cookie gluing both ends inside of the 7/36th hole 12:00.
Last I drilled an 11/64th hole into the two remaining balls with existing holes in them that would allow me to pass the paracord through.
Looping the last piece of paracord through the large hole in the ball 12:55 that is attached to the cookie passing each end through the last two holes in the cookie 13:05.
Pass one end of the paracord through the 11/64th hole 13:15 and out the larger side. Tie a simple knot and pull the knot back inside of the larger hole. Repeat for the last end.
The cookie and ball sizes are not critical, nor is the paracord length. But you will need to do some tests to know what size of holes you will need to drill in the wood balls.
The Reassembly @ 16:04
The solution's @ 15:26
