Ok but how do the airlocks work
@frostbytten08
10 ай бұрын
The airlock has a small amount of water in it. As the pressure increases in the jar, the gases bubble through the water and escape. This keeps the pressure from building up and eventually breaking the jar. The same water keeps air from getting INTO the jar. The only way that would happen is if a vacuum is created in the jar reducing the pressure below the pressure outside. Fun fact, toilets work in the exact same way. To keep the gas from sewer entering, the toilet water acts as an airlock. To keep bubbles from coming in due to rising sewer pressure a vent stack is included.

Not to be mean, rslash, but I feel like your off mark for story 2. Many cultures give some type of precious thing( i.e., metal, stones, ect) for special occasions like most( not all) mexican families give gold jewelry to a person for special occasions. I have received rings,bracelets,etc, from my family. A few pieces that I've received could technically be labeled heirlooms. My plans for the jewelry are to pass it on to my kids and any kids my brother has so that they can still be used. The second reason is if those reletives ever get in a bind they can pawn off the jewelry so they can continue fowrd( thats the same reasoning my mom gave me for some of the jewelry pieces).

@nosoulvalentine
8 ай бұрын
You don’t need equipment at all. You can ferment in any bottle or jar laying around, use balloons as airlocks or just screw the cap loosely. And you can use bakers yeast and you dont need yeast nutrients. I made it like that and it turned out amazing.
@Murlockingqc
7 ай бұрын
You don't even need yeast, unpasteurized honey or any fruits you add will add natural wild yeasts and will start fermenting the mead. Fruits also provide some nutrients to the mead, there's also a few things from your kitchen that might help fermentation like sea salt, ginger powder, cream of tartar (or tartaric acid) and more... For equipment you can use a big plastic juice bottle, piece the cap and add an airlock or leave the cap very slightly open... balloons also work but they are nasty... Starting brewing equipment is really not expensive, go to your local homebrew store and get a grommet and an airlock for under 5$. You can get packet of yeast for about 5$ aswell, and 1 packet will do 5 gallons of wine. The most expensive part of brewing is : For mead, its the fruits and honey. For wine, it's sourcing pure grape juice. For beer, it's hops and yeast... the grains are extremely affordable.

How long does Mead stay good like say you forget you made some, and like maybe you find it way later, like 3 years or so. Is it still good, or would you say it's bad
@yurisv7315
11 ай бұрын
it depends a lot on how controlled the fermentation process is. If you are careful enough so that you don't contaminate the mead with bad bacteria or mold, and if the storing conditions are right it can last a few years in properly in sterilized vesels.
@Northraider123
11 ай бұрын
Assuming you did all the steps correctly and didn't forget it halfway thru making the mead should be absolutely fine. Infa t it should actually be better given its aged. All this assuming proper storage conditions

How do you know how much honey is necessary for a gallon batch so you dont waste so much honey if it isnt necessary???? And does it alter the taste in a good or bad way if you use too little or too much 🤔???
@Murlockingqc
7 ай бұрын
You can use a calculator online or do the math yourself. You can also use a recipe to make this more simple to you... Those shorts are too short to explain all the details, I recommend watching full video that goes in details if you wanna learn the art of brewing, it's really not that complicated and super fun ! Basically, everything fermentable as a PPG (Points per Pound per Gallon) so you can use that value to know how many "points" of fermentable sugars you have (this is your starting gravity on an hydrometer). Some yeast strains might not have a high alcoholic tolerance so you also have to take that into consideration, but generally speaking the yeast will consume all of the sugars and turn them into alcohol. You can achieve about 18% ABV with some yeast strains. The term you wanna look at are : "Starting Gravity, Final Gravity, Hydrometer (alcohol) , yeast alcohol tolerance, yeast attenuation, PPG brewing" . For your final question, if you don't use enough honey it will be very dry (all sugars used by the yeast) and low in alcohol and the honey flavor will not be very noticeable. If you use too much, it's possible the brew won't even start fermenting because sugar is antibacterial. In the case where you would use alot of honey and the brew would ferment, you would get high alcohol mead (~18%) with some hints of the honey and if sugars are left in the brew at the point it would also make the mead thicker (like a light syrup) and increase the honey flavor even more. Some people like their mead dry, some like it sweet and some like it very sweet, almost like a liqueur.
