There are only a handful of people left in the world who practice the almost forgotten craft of paint making. David Kremer is one of them. He produces pigments and colors from plant substances and minerals.
His craft is almost as old as mankind itself. The man from the Allgäu region helps himself to nature when he produces his colorants by hand in Aichstetten.
Madder varnish from the madder root, for example. The reddish pigment is one of the oldest organic dyes. Instrument makers use it to refine the wood of their instruments. Or a carbon black. It can be found on cave drawings thousands of years old. The 39-year-old produces the black from charred cherry stones. He finds the blue hue azurite in stones with copper content. These are just three pigments whose raw materials come from nature.
David Kremer has the knowledge of the raw materials, their processing and manufacture into pigments and colors. Since the 1977s, his customers have included historic preservationists such as museums, artists and craftsmen worldwide. The family business has 250 pigments from natural resources in its range. Which pigments are suitable for watercolor, oil or wall paints and how pigments and paints are created from natural materials is shown in this handicraft.
