The best advice I've ever heard in relation to backgrounds is this: Don't treat them as backgrounds. Remember, this is a tiny portion of a world that you're rendering.
@markcrilley
7 жыл бұрын
I like the second part of this advice, but I feel the first part is too sweeping of a statement in the case of comics. In some panels the background needs to fall back and allow the foreground to shine. In others it can assert itself and play a starring role.
@markcrilley
7 жыл бұрын
The writer/artist's job is to know when it is best to "treat the background as a background" and when it is better not to. As with so many creative matters, it's hard to make bold general statements that are true in all instances.

My advice is to get someone to ya'know write the scenario or if you already have one in mind just get them to write it down for you.It will help you in so many ways.And eventualy get them involved in the process of creating the novel.It's so much more easier to continue your work with them by your side.

So for those of you guys who are having trouble with designing background, I have a good experience with creating background designs. I would like to share you my personal experiences on how I became good in drawing landscapes self taught. I had a common mindset like you guys that I can't draw such time consuming landscape art. But it really goes back to 4 years ago during my Sof-More year in high school that I pretty much had a good sense in drawing characters and how their proportion worked. The specific assignment I remember had a caligraphy brush and we needed to draw a city skyline or tree branch with cherry blossom scene. So I drawn a city skyline using the brush pen only out of bordem. A sumi-e drawing of a two characters running away from the poverty in New York. I also had my lunch pass or gold card to buy and eat outside. I always visited the art room because there were so many books that I can learn from and use them as a reference if I needed to. During the visit in the art room my art teacher told me that while putting most of the artworks away in the storage cabin, she actually looked at my drawing and she said she wanted to buy it! So that day I was lucky that my artwork has been a big change. I asked the reason why she wanted to buy this drawing. She made a brief commentary saying that she liked the perspective and the composition of this drawing. The two of the characters resembled the art teacher and her husband. She went on to saying I can already see that the art teacher and her husband are moving away from such infrastructure going on in NYC. So I looked at the artwork to see from my own abstraction I made such work. The next day I visited the art room she paid me $50 considering that this was my first time artwork being sold. The drawing was even shown during the fundraiser party at my school. One of the people in the party had said to buy this artwork and he wanted to see me in person. But I wasn't able to see him on that day. But the year had passed and I sumbitted another artwork, even two if I remember. It was at the beginning of my senior year when the fan had actually hired me to become his artist! I was about to start my senior year so well even the May 2017 was an lit year for me that we had finished our first coloring book project. I was also close to my graduation year but sadly I wasn't able to because for the urgency from my grand father in Tokyo had a terrible abdominal cancer. The visit was about 4 weeks approximately. One week later after we visited Japan, he passed away. Since that day, I got so many friend request from my uncle who actually inherited the izakaya resturant in west subway exit of Lidabashi. My grandmother is doing okay. The day after tomorrow is my grandmother's birthday. So what did I learned about my journey in background art? So 4 years ago, I described on how I had seen my artwork was right? So I applied the same techniques this time using the art basics, I was able to re-create my own perspective in any shapes and forms in random perspective. This is your assignment if you want to get good in background art. Many people would actually tell you the fundamental terms and instructions on how to develop background drawing. But here is the thing, it can get complicated. However, that can be decluttered if you crumple your paper and open it back up again. Using your ruler to draw a horizon line, get your distance out of your paper and see what kind of shape, form, or landscape you see. The crummpled paper lines just signifies the background you just made out of random notice. So my question is, from using your art basics and mistakes. What kind of mistakes would you rather improvise and move on with? Remember the term art generally means how you master the craft of using your tools in disposal. Whether you use your materials on digital or physical paper to draw something onto it. Its how you improve your skills in terms of crafting that image that you just seen on canvas, wood, metal sheet, clay, or whatever your mind desires you to do on that material.

1. If you want readers to have a strong sense of location, use at least on large panel "wide shot" early in the scene. 2. To keep a location from seeming generic, including details that are quirky and specific. 3. A Knowledge of 1- . 2 and 3.point perspective is helpful. (Some would say it is essential.) 4. Don't forget the importance of lighting: It can be the single most crucial element in conveying mood and atmosphere. 5. Just because a location is fictional doesn't mean it can't be inspired by a place in the real world. If a sense of realism is your goal, consider using reference. 6. Most creators seek contrast between different locations in the story, both for the sake of variety, and to make sure the readers immediately know where the scene is taking place. 7. In a panel that has both a foreground and a background, I prefer to maintain visual clarity between the two. 8. Returning to the same location but showing it in a different "state" can add a sense of realness to your story. 9. If you're using a computer as part of your art creation process, you can cut and paste some backgrounds, saving yourself a lot of time and effort. (Be cautious about overdoing, though.) 10. Some comic creators begin a scene with several silent "location panels," giving readers a sense of what it's like to be there.

Mr. Mark, I'm fourteen, and on thong that always bugs me with my art is how things can be completely random, trash on the floor, leave on the grounds, hair blowing in the wind, trees, rocks, water, ECT, and yet be appealing to the eye and look like they belong. When is enough detail? your not going to draw evey grain of sand or every leave on the bush, so how does one know when to star suggesting it? I know a lot of that is earned by practice and experience and years of drawing, but if you have any advice on this at all, I'd be supper grateful. Thank you much for making these videos! And your books, I especially like learning from mastering manga three! Thanks again!

Actually I do have one legit criticism of your work that I think can be improved upon... it's the LETTERING. There are certain guidelines that professional comic book letterers follow. How to arrange the balloons in a way that doesn't adversely affect the artwork, how to properly construct the "tail," etc. There are lots of "comic book lettering" tutorials at Blambot, and Comicraft made an actual book on the subject. It's mostly a bunch of tiny hints that cumulatively improve the actual READING part of the comic. And although these pros use Illustrator, a lot of the techniques translate to Photoshop. Just my opinion. :) Also, have you considered making a book SPECIFICALLY on drawing backgrounds/perspective/environments? Because if these books are representative of your current skill level, I would buy that.

Did you accidentally call the guy from Miki falls Brody? I don't know his real name because I haven't read that series of yours, but I doubt you called two male protagonists the same thing!

So I have a couple of ideas for comics, and I'm trying to get to the point where I can draw my characters from different angles, but so far I haven't really thought about the backgrounds and what it'll look like when it's finished. I've also been learning how to draw things from nature, like trees and flowers and different animals. Does anyone have any advice for how to actually *start* my comics?

Gah, I'm making a comic right now and I absolutely hate drawing backgrounds. I'm just not good at drawing inorganic things like buildings and stuff.

As a reader I never really liked the opening of a comic to be mostly back ground, it is quite interesting to see the background sure, but I mostly prefer to see the character first, with some background, then a big background scene. I don't know if that's just me, these tips r really good though, and ur art style is amazing, just sharing a very specific opinion

Speaking of fonts and such, do you write in your own text, or is it typed? I have awful handwriting, but I want to draw all my text to make my work more personable.

I have a question, not about comics, but this is because I want to make comics, anyway I was wondering about drawing the basic structure of characters. I've seen some people start with basic shapes and others start with a sort of stick figure. what's different about these two approaches?

Hi, I have a question for you. I recently started to draw a picture in 2 point perspective. My problem is that I wanted to draw a row of pillars which have the same distance between them, but how do I do this? Since it is 2 point perspective I am able to just use the same dinstance.

What if theres 2 pages of the same background but at a different angle and I dont wanna redraw all that... what do I do? Or same background but different characters there and different things there. Like perhaps its been years and the place has changed a bit? Or everything the same but the people in different area of the location? Like maybe there are some stairs and then next box theyre at the bottom on the stairs? Plus with all the details.
