I purchased a used one as the piece is a bit pricey, but the machine kzitem.infoUgkxG6fbm3cHBd7CNTjk5D-dwYe9c9tCB9ZN has surpassed my expectations. We sand small parts by hand often, sized around 1"x1/2," and specifically look for a piece that's designed to be vertical. The motor has plenty of torque and great speed settings. The only inconvenience I had is that the disk measures 5" where we trim 6" stick-and-sand disks down easily by mounting it then cutting with a box cutter.

To flare out an end, you can slide it down over a bottle, after it’s heated, to get an even flare. A wine bottle or anything similar will work.

Heat up a larger portion of the pipe and when flexible, force it over the outlet. Depending on the size of the rectangle you will have to size the pipe accordingly.

Neat idea. Good instruction. However, one drawback is that you're further restricting the arguably already too small airflow cross-section of the tool's dust collection port.
@J20Jeepster
5 жыл бұрын
True. You may use the same idea and go to the outside of the port with larger PVC if you would like. :-)
@Kactapuss
5 жыл бұрын
Looks like the craftsman sliding miter saw - the design of the shroud on that tool barely funnels any dust toward that port anyway... Really a bad design. I have a rigid saw that's much cleaner with just a dust bag than this saw is with a vac connected.

Thank you! Such a simple solution, yet I’d only only seen strange ways to use PVC as an adapter. This is the perfect solution-I appreciate that you showed reducing AND enlarging! I’m going to see if I can create one for my Black & Decker BDEMS600-a mouse sander with a terribly inadequate dust collector. I’ll need to flatten the end to a thin oval, perhaps I’ll need thinner PVC to make the fine-tuning? Have you found situations where you needed to add vent holes because of the strength/workload of the vacuum? My mouse sander dust exhaust is quite small. I think I’ll need to drill in vent holes to keep the vac from overheating. Any suggestions? Thank you again, this is the BEST solution by a long-shot!
@J20Jeepster
4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment! I forget if I mentioned it in the video, but if you need to drastically change the shape of the PVC, sometimes it's easier to heat the part you want to shape in a pot of hot water. Yes, you will want to keep an ear on your vacuum. Too much restriction can cause the impeller in the Vac to spin too fast (due to lack of work load) and overheat the motor. Would love to see a picture of your project when you're done! Links to my social media are on my KZitem Channel home page.

Follow-up... I found an 8 inch length of 1.5 inch PCV pipe in my rummage box, and now have just what I needed to fit my Harbor Freight 1 inch belt sander and Ridgid 4 gallon shop vac. One of the best uses so far for my heat gun ! Thanks for the idea !

That's great! Dipping the end in hot water works well too, for those that don't have a heat gun. Thanks for watching!

You wouldn't think finding an adapter would be such a problem... but it is... today I using my Harbor Freight 1 inch belt sander that has a dust port that is 1.75 inches in diameter... the same diameter as the 4 gallon Ridgid shop vac hose that I use mainly in my basement workshop, although I do have two other larger Ridgid shop vacs with different size hoses, but I didn't want to go lug them in from my garages... and I would still have a connection issue. So what I really need is a 1.75 inch to 1.75 inch coupler... looks like your idea will work great for me... but now I probably have to buy a 10' pvc pipe from Home Depot ! :) Years ago when I got my Delta miter saw, I used a radiator hose that had a right angle bend that fit the Delta plastic adapter... then I have a plastic adapter that fits inside the other end of the hose to attach my 1.75 inch shop vac hose... I think it must be some sort of radiator hose adapter that I got at the same time as the radiator hose... I remember it wasn't an easy shop vac hook-up !

There's got to be some missing science/math to this. Surely the engineers chose a certain inside diameter for airflow and to not put too much strain on the motor. I endeavor to find this knowledge so I can get the correct inside diameter so as to prolong the lifespan of my vacuum motor.
