I bought a craftabrew kit back when I wanted to try mead making for the first time. My experience was fantastic. My kit came with a broken carboy (no doubt the fault of the mailman.) I asked craftabrew for just a new carboy and they sent me a whole second kit. The instructions were perfectly clear, even though I knew nothing about brewing back then, and through the entire process there was never a single hiccup. I get to say that the first mead I ever brewed came out damn near perfect, and it started what is a legitimate hobby for me now. Craftabrew is a great option for someone learning to brew.

Can you describe your process a bit more? I just ordered the kit and I would like to add some fruit for my first ever batch of mead
@LazyBoyA1
10 ай бұрын
@@dklee1313 I haven't personally done it yet, but I plan on adding fruits to the secondary fermentation of my first batch and read some useful stuff. If you add fruit to the primary fermentation, most of the original fruit flavor is stripped, you are left with the fermented flavor of the fruit so if you like that specific fermented fruit taste go for it. Adding it in secondary makes the original's fruit flavor stay as it isn't going through the rigorous stage of primary fermentation, preserving the original fruity taste. You can add fruit in both first and secondary fermentation if you want a bolder fruity flavor. Then for sanitation I read to add Campden tablets to the mixture of honey, water and fruit then wait 24 hours to add your yeast for primary, as for secondary it seems debatable as it might not be necessary since the high alcoholic content and CO2 rich environment prevent most stuff from growing, some do say to sanitize in another container with water and Campden tablets just to be safe. Hope that helps and happy brewing.

Looking online and at the liquor store, not much better, but my aunt was telling me that it's easy to make. Fast forward to christmas, she got me one of your kits! So, one year later, tried my brew for the first time after letting it sit for 6 months, and it turned out great! Did a spiced blackberry with cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Only thing is that it ended up being some 3% ABV. Still tastes great, but I can't wait to make more and try all sorts of wonderful combinations! And of course, thanks for the terrific video guide! Somehow, it still ended up turning out great regardless! ended up with a 14% abv dry mead

When the bubbles go through the airlock like an air bubble through molasses, you're basically done. @@oliveprocessor3068 This is the correct answer. Bubbles don't mean anything. No bubbles can mean bad seal but still fermenting. Bubbles after the end of fermentation are just degassing. If your seal is good, you might look at your carboy for 6 months thinking it is still fermenting.

Also if you do not have the stuff to clean your utensils ( small amount of dawn soap litterly a spec ) clean it very very well after ( u can use ISO Alchol as well just make sure it's very clean no residual residue. Got your kit, followed everything as you instructed, ended up with basically vinegar based on taste, and mead was cloudy after 4 weeks of fermentation... Bottling process was also a pain in the ass, and I didn't manage to get the last 1-2 inches of the jar above the sediment...
@theastronomer5800
2 ай бұрын
Hmmm, I never had a vinegar taste and I've made many mead. I keep it simple, don't add any chemicals. I use 1ga carboy, usually 1.5kg of honey, add water half way and put in yest, mix mix mix, add water to about 2" from the top and let it sit for 3 months. Of course it will be cloudy after 4 weeks, it has not degassed yet so yeast is being moved around by the CO2. Give it time :) I never bottle a mead before 3 months. When bottling it helps to have 2 people, and you want to tilt the carboy very gently near the end to about 45 degrees so you can get the most out. I usually put the last bit in a separate bottle as it will suck in some sediment, but my first bottles are crystal clear.

Looks awesome! How long does it take from Day 1 until it's ready to be bottled?

30 days from start to finish. You can always let it age in the bottle and the flavors will develop more over time.

So, after making a batch, can you start the process again but instead of using water use the previous batch?

You resanitize your funnel each nutrient addition? Also would it be possible to keep the sanitizing water solution in the bucket till the 5th day addition?
