They will probably change the rule so that you can't step through a shot unless you're outside C2. It would make putting harder and make it more exciting. I would even like to see them make the circle bigger so that it emphasizes the points I just made. 35 and 70, it's not much but it will make a difference.

Good tips. Brian offers the step putt as a technique from shallow C2. Would be curious to know the recommendation from deep C2 and outside, assuming we're still putting.

You can step putt in C1, as long as you step up to your lie and not beyond while still maintaining balance, after the shot, behind the lie marker. Correct??

Do pros that push putt switch to spin putting for circle 2 or is there a different technique for that. I have a hard time getting 40 foot push putts to basket. For me it’s about 30 feet but who knows what I’m doing is right or wrong.

What’s your best tip if you don’t like step or jump putting? I’m always nervous I’m going to sprain an ankle.
@menbah
10 ай бұрын
It sounds like you might be thinking of the jump (or step) as a big explosive movement. Start practicing getting your body into the movement more without stepping. First just a rocking motion, then as you move more you use your back leg as a counter balance. Next step that won't be enough and you have to step slightly forward to catch yourself. Same motion just a tiny bit 'more' every time.

@@menbah I’ve been playing a long time, I just never had a good C2 putt and I play a lot of courses with bad footing with ankles that have seen too many sprains hahah. I do the traditional stagger and have developed a decent straddle, but only to about 35ft. After that it all kinds of falls apart or is all chance.

Brian, you are an extraordinarily good teacher. Your analysis is so consistently highlighting the essential points, leaving all the little stuff for AFTER, which is what allows learning through doing to work correctly. You identify the core element and then demonstrate how it permeates everything else, which empowers the practitioner to think clearly about what they are doing in the most narrow possible terms. I'm not doing this justice, but preventing distraction is among the most important aspects of teaching effectively. Eye on the ball, that sort of thing. Thank you! I am curious though. Do your putts flutter because you're mostly a push putter? Flutter is one of the weirdest of "defects" that no one seems able to figure out. Is yours perhaps caused by pushing from the back or side of the disc instead of pulling toward the basket from the front edge of the disc? Also, where does "finger pop" fit into your movement? With half a wrist movement to reduce error, I'd think finger pop would be necessary to cancel flutter, no?

I severely disagree for most amateur players to actually develop two different styles of puts like he has done! It's way better to focus the time you have one one putting style, and let the jump/step just be an extension of that movement as you engage more and more of your body in the movement.

I agree, figure out the mechanics of one, dial it in, then only as you’ve become an expert at that type of putt, maybe develop a second just for those awkward situational putts.

I disagree with your disagreement 😂. From my experience, experimenting with a lot of putt styles (various stances and use/non use of the different levers). After a while I settled into what works and drill that. If you don’t try it all you can end up with something suboptimal for you.

Get at least 4 of your putters. Putt from 8 different points around the basket starting 9 steps, 11, 13, etc. 2 rounds per distance. You should be able to throw 80 putts in 10 minutes. WARNING if you haven't tried to practice for an extended amount of time, don't over do it. 15 steps is edge of circle 1* When you are ready to throw from 21steps you will have thrown 500 putts in roughly only 2 hours and you will have plenty of data to work with. You will have noticed that some throws are better than others. From there you can hone in on what you want and what you can get out of your putters. Then you can move on to 500 putts a day and so on. Then you might want to think about looking for a sponsor. Good Luck!
