One time, when their family was having dinner, the phone rang-and since there was no answering machine, his father jumped up to grab it. His mother yelled, “Bernie, Bernie, sit, sit! Let it ring!” But his father said, “Sophie, it could be a student. And if the student has the courage to call his professor, the professor should always be there.”
As a leader, heed these profound words. If your employees have the courage to come to you about issues that are affecting their lives, you should always be there for them. You should always be advocating for the people on your team. Invite them to come to you with any concerns, striving to create the best possible working environment for them and supporting them in every way necessary. Make your employees feel valued by learning how to encourage their growth every day. They’ll never forget the encouragement and guidance you give them.
If you’re an employee, find the courage to bring up your concerns and questions with your supervisor to make sure your needs are met. Never assume your boss knows what support you need. To maximize the value you bring to your organization, you may need to ask for help with finding the resources that will help you succeed. You might need help making changes in areas such as your workload, the types of projects you handle, or how communication and work flows, for instance. A wise supervisor wants you to ask for help. Open communication between a boss and employees allows everyone to continue growing on a daily basis and performing at their peak.
