If you are actually going to purchase wire for the nose piece, you can, relatively cheaply, buy actual metal pieces made for the nose piece. They come with a adhesive side that you just peel and stick. I make a little place to just slide them in without removing the sticky back. That way, I can always replace it if it gets weak or breaks. But so far that hasn't happened. 😷💜

Over the last two months I have watched numerous tutorials, made many masks, and tried out different designs. This was my very first mask. It was time-consuming because of all of the top-stitching. Now after trying all the other styles, I have to say that this one is the best. I have washed my mask many times, and it has held it’s shape nicely. It is very practical with both the filter pocket and nose clip. I am going to do another one for myself. It uses too much fabric and time for the ones you give away, but if want a good one for yourself, this should be the one.

These directions were much appreciated! The other evening dropped off a handful of masks for my sister, a nurse, before work. She put out the masks for her coworkers. She texted a while later saying that they were a hit with her coworkers. She said one nurse said she's passed on several other homemade ones, but she took one of mine because "it checks all the boxes and it looks nice".

Hello! This is exactly the pattern I was looking for because it is pleated and has casings for the ear loops, but I have a disability which makes it difficult to focus, so I hope that you might consider making an instruction PDF available to download and print out. First off, thank you for this demo video! I have made several of these masks. This is a fairly simple pattern for a sewing beginner. I only have one concern. Could I do the topstitch of the filter pocket before sewing it together? I am a self-taught sewer and found it difficult to get the top stitch smooth while also gathering the rest of the mask so that I do not accidentally sew it together.

Fabric size - 15 x 7.5 inches. Wire length 6.5 inches. Since elastic is hard to come by, you could tread any type if non-silky cord through the casing instead of elastic, or sew a 28"-34" binding for ties.

I couldn't find elastic anywhere, so I used new shoe laces for the ties. Running shoes always seem to come with an extra pair, so I had plenty around. I used coffee bag ties for the nose piece. They are quite wide, so I was able to cut each one in half (lengthwise) to get two nose pieces from each tie. I also used two layers of non-woven material for a filter. I didn't sew it in, but I inserted it before doing the top stitching. I made it smaller than the mask, so it can be removed. Also, for the pleats, I folded the mask in half, pressed it, and then folded the top and bottom to the press line, and pressed again.
