Kyle, did you use E or S glass for this, and what weight of material? Also, you mentioned that you thought two layers were good for most applications. Does that include making parts for road cars and boats, or did you have mainly race cars in mind, for which the weight savings are critical? Good stuff, thank you.

I know it's been a long time. But is there any reason if why didn't you use gelcoat before layup? Cheers for all the vids!!!

Where do you get your fiberglass, and what are good cheap "general" brands of fiberglass? I'm competing in FSAE 2019 and I need as much help as I can get!

Do you need to wax the wood too ( it's maybe a kind of stupid question but I don't know)
@danielrose1392

Here no wood is exposed. If you have exposed wood parts, first seal them then use a release agent like wax. For more detailed instructions you can check tutorials for RC Fiberglass planes, there using wood molds is common practice.

hope you see this since the video is old, but what did you use in between the female mould and the actual piece?
@NeilChandMusic

+Neil Chand looks like there's a clear plastic sheet? like a cling wrap haha
@KYLEENGINEERS
8 жыл бұрын
+Neil Chand I do actually use industrial cling wrap around the outside edge of my moulds where I don't want it to stick! But you wouldn't want to use that for you main surface as the finish would be terrible. I think it's mentioned in the video, but the mould is coated with multiple layers of wax, then sprayed with PVA (the blue stuff), and I let that dry into a sort of a plastic film before layup, and that provides a clean release. Thanks for watching!

+KYLE.DRIVES sweet thanks! i was considering just using cling wrap for the whole thing but yeah rather the cleaner finish with the Wax and PVA

so how would the process be different with carbon fiber? don't you have to heat up carbon fiber or something like that?
@laurieagnew6706
7 жыл бұрын
Depends what sort of carbon fiber mate, if its pre-preg (resin already inside the fibers) then yes many require the use of heat and pressure in an autoclave for instance in order to cure properly, however there are also room temperature resin systems that dont require heat or pressure
@laurieagnew6706

Simon WoodburyForget the reason they use resins that require an oven cure is that yes being strong is an advantage, impregnating fibres with a room temperature curing resin completely negates the ability to have pre preg in the first place; the advantages of which include optimal resin/fibre usually 60 percent resulting in the lightest possible parts possible while utilising the fibre/resin matrix to its fullest extent. They require pressure in order to compress the layers and drive all the air out otherwise you risk delamination on such a leanly infused part. Infusion looks fantastic if resin is degassed correctly however results in 100% percent saturation and thus a heavier part. We get our pre preg in from korea and it has to be kept in a fridge. once the package is opened you have 40 days to use the roll or it is discarded as the resin slowly goes off at room temp....
@lotuselansteve

Err, not exactly correct on a few points. If you replace the unused carbon back into the freezer (not a fridge as it isn't cold enough) it will refreeze and you are back to 12-18 month shelf life. However, there are prepreg carbons that can be kept at room temperature for over a year. If your prepreg carbon only lasts 40 days once opened I suggest you look for a better quality supplier :-) You need 100% saturation in order to obtain the maximum strength. Dry fibres mean a weak part. Prepreg is 100% saturated, but at the optimum amount - around 40% (not 60%) by weight (eg - 100gms of carbon requires around 40gms of resin). However, too much resin also results in a weaker part.

Can we use thin metal sheet to make mould instead of foam?
@petertelford4900

Yes you can use metal but its always best to still apply a mold release wax. First im am an actual fiberglasser just saw this channel and im shocked make shore you roll the glass not just use brush
