Good evening, Gary. Just wanted to let you know my Passion Flower is still doing well in her new portable trellis home. We've at least another month before our last frost...difficult to say because we had snow again yesterday.); The good thing is, I'm receiving the knowledge you & Robbie share which will help me have an abundant garden this season. I was so depressed because my spinal impairments have gotten worse. Planting in the ground just wouldn't allow me to care for the garden in a proper & loving manner. Planting a garden in totes & bakery buckets will be a godsend. Your tips are life altering for me.(: I just found out my doctor is ill, so I won't be seeing her for another month. I'd already planned to surprise her with a bucket filled with flowers & herbs. A few of my cherry tomato seedlings are growing well. I think she might like one of those too. Take care, ~ Covah

2nd year making my own potting mix. I make my own hot compost, leaf mold and raise a bunch of worms. I really do not have to purchase any soil amendments or fertilizers. My only problem, last year I found jumping worms in my Ruth Stout potato and onion bed. I also found some jumping worms in last years leaf mold bin. Because or the jumping worms, I completely changed my potato/onion bed, plus last fall I constructed what I hope is a jumping worm proof leaf mold bin. I hate buying crap at the big box stores, and do not follow popular store bought organic fertilizers. I did spend some money on a microscope so I could get better at composting and making my own fertilizers. So far it has paid off. Stay Well!!!

I do this on a larger scale, but those totes are an awesome idea for smaller crops for me. I have a lot of leftovers from all my guinea pig cages. The used hay and bedding, along with the poops make great compost additions. The used wood shavings also make a great mulch with a built in fertilizer. Its a great way to reuse all the leftovers instead of putting it in the garbage. I figured since I didn't have chickens, the guinea pig waste is valuable as well since they love the veggies from all my gardens.

I want to grow pumpkins this year can I plant the seeds directly into the pine shavings that I use for compost? Do I have to use dirt also?? Can you please tell me how to plant them?? Thank you Gary in advance. Have a wonderful day and eat what you grow. ☺️
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
Жыл бұрын
Pine shavings are high in carbon, chicken manure is high in nitrogen so they would be a good pairing for compost. I haven't tried growing in that combination so I don't really know. However I would definitely try it. I know pumpkins take off in horse or cow manure. I would try a couple of ways. As it is and adding green matter like grass clippings leafy greens etc. Bottom line experimentation is the only answer I have. Thanks.

@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy

I used to believe that too based on what people said. Now I have personal first hand experience. Never add fresh. It needs to be well broken down/composted. The first ingredient on most commercial bagged potting soil is Forestry products. Woodchips fall under that category.

Hi Gary... Is this a third of composted manure or just a green compost mixed with manure? If it's all composted manure, isn't 33% in a container too much? I heard that 10-20% is the proper ratio for manure to potting mix.
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy

The green bucket is finished leaf mold compost. To set up my compost bin I add a thick layer of fallen leaves, sprinkle a thin layer of chicken manure on top, then repeat until it is full. So it's a mix.

Thanks. I've tested our soil. It has a Ph around 8. Alkaline. This is the link to how I built my sifting trommel kzitem.info/news/bejne/qpiw2X96mIaSaG0
