This is really helpful, how can I delete some bonds in the graphene sheet and add bonds between layers?

Beautiful, simple, love it! I had a couple of (much more) complicated ways of doing it. Just out of curiosity, would it be possible to run a cloth sim on the hex base mesh while keeping the modifier stack?
@CGFigures
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The short answer is yes. I would try to run the cloth sim first just to cut down some calculations, or at least move it to the top of the modifier stack. I have actually done it before when I was trying to figure out how to deform the planes, though I ended up using a combination of soft body and rigid body physics.

Thank you! Do you have any suggestions as to how to make a graphene liquid cell (two layers of graphene forming a pocket with liquid in between)?
@CGFigures

Hey Mila, does the pocket need to be closed or can it just be two layers with a liquid in the middle? There are a bunch of ways you could do this, ranging from very simple (materials) to very complex (fluid simulation).

Many thanks for this helpful tutorial. I have a question for you. I would be grateful if you answer. I want to shine three laser beam lights (RGB) with different angles on the graphene surface would you mind if I ask you for help? Again tnx,
@CGFigures

For laser beams I recommend using a simple smooth cylinder with an emission shader that has the colour you want. For Eevee I would enable bloom and then position the cylinders at the angles you want.

When using the array modifier, I see that applying the particle system to get the atoms in place doesn't seem to apply to the other objects in the array. Moving the array modifier position in the modifier list either makes the array objects disappear or just doesn't have any effect. Increasing the number of particles to match the total number of vertices doesn't seem to work either. Do I need to duplicate the object completely or is there a less memory-intensive workaround?
@CGFigures
Жыл бұрын
The approach I used in this tutorial is pretty old. These days I would use geometry nodes instead of the particle systems. I detail some of that in this video kzitem.info/news/bejne/yp-kqYaloYSTlGk. Alternatively I believe Erindale has a video on making hexagonal grids. There are also videos from Johnny Matthews and Cartesian Caramel. You could follow one of those and instance a sphere on the points using geometry nodes. It's much less memory intensive and are more flexible.

Perfekt, how you calculated the 0.6 to fix the shape of hexagons. Because I used many subdivisions but they still stretched.
@CGFigures
3 жыл бұрын
I found that 0.6 worked as an approximation. I'm curious why the subdivisions are causing issues though... is your graphene sheet really big? The stretching sounds like it may be an issue with the scale not being applied.
Thanks for the very nice tutorial. I am a beginner in Blender and I am wondering how you would include another layer within graphene. I mean, making a hole in the lattice and include a patch of a different lattice inside this hole. I was trying to modify an additional graphene layer using the array modifier, but it does not work. do you have some hints?
@CGFigures
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rafael. I think I have a sense of what you mean but I want to be sure. You mean, have a different lattice entirely? Or one with different atoms? Or one with different coloured bonds? (Or some combination?)
@rgmendes13
3 жыл бұрын
@@CGFigures Thanks for your answer! Yes, an entirely different lattice and atoms. Something like a patch of a different material within graphene. Now I just draw the graphene as you explained in the video, deleted a few vertices and faces creating holes across the graphene lattice. I tried to create some carbon atoms with a motion blur to give the illusion it is being ejected, but I was not successful... Then I created other smaller pieces of graphene as new object, modified the atoms and placed inside the holes. As a plane structure it looks ok, but as soon as I try to modify and change perspectives, it does not look so good....I though that joining everything as a single object would help, but as soon as I join, everything gets out of place. Maybe the easiest is to create the new structures/lattice in Avogadro and then work as different objects.
@CGFigures
3 жыл бұрын
@@rgmendes13 Hey Rafael. That is potentially a tricky problem. You could definitely try a direct export from Avogadro. For making a different material I try to shape everything the way I like, then apply the modifiers (at least the wireframe) and make changes to the materials as I want, adding loop cuts if necessary. For the carbon atoms being ejected I would maybe recommend doing that with some kind of compositing. I personally use photoshop for motion blur but it can be done with Blender's compositor. Joining tends to copy over a lot of modifiers and properties that can easily mess up the final structure so you might be better off parenting the smaller pieces to the main lattice. Hope something in there helps. Cheers.

Glad you enjoyed it. This will work in 2.79 with no problems, you'll just have to render in cycles. A lot of the early tutorials were done in 2.79 because the laptop I was using for testing them was too old to run 2.8

I couldn't find the "convert to dual mesh" option after I searched for it, it would be very helpful for me if you could solve this problem for me.
@CGFigures

This is something I've been meaning to address. I'm guessing you're using Blender 2.90 or 2.90.1. As far as I know the Tissue add-on hasn't been updated for 2.90 yet. Convert to dual mesh is only in 2.83 or earlier. You can still use "dual mesh" in 2.90 which can be accessed by using the "n" (right) side panel. The option is under "Edit - Tissue Tools" It is a little different though and I'll probably make a quick video about it this week.

@@CGFigures Any update on this? I would love to know how to make it using Blender 2.91, as "dual mesh" in the Tissue properties doesn't work to create hexagons. I took the subdivided plane and pressed "dual mesh" and it created a separate Dual Mesh object. Then I pressed "Tessellate" under Tissue Tools and it created the hexagonal structure. However, the gridlines from the original plane still remained, so instead of just hexagons, I have hexagons crisscrossed with a grid. Any idea how to get around that to make just hexagons? Thanks!

@@jordinmetz2698 As it happens, tissue has been updated for 2.91. So if you search for "convert to dual mesh" you should be able to find it again. I do have a separate video that discusses the grid problem though if you want a more behind the scenes look at what is going on
