You should have ALL the ingredients to make this today! I'm going to show you how to make heavily scented bath salts that will remain clump-free. To make clump-free scented bath salt, add the fragrance oil to a dry base powder. The powder will absorb the fragrance and will effectively scent the bath salts without getting them wet. Use any dry powder that you have, like arrowroot powder, baking soda, tapioca flour or starch, corn or potato starch… Or use powders specifically designed to hold fragrance oil, like natrasorb or slick fix. But essentially any dry powder will work as a base- ** it's just that some work a lot better than others. ** Start with a small recipe first. Experiment with recipes before making a big batch.
RECIPE: 1/2 cup salt (I used Epsom. Small-medium grain works best. Fine salt or big coarse salt is harder to work with) + 2 milliliters wet ingredients {1.5 milliliters fragrance oil + .50 milliliters emulsifier}. You may use a different emulsifier, like polysorbate 80 or 60. I used polysorbate 20 because it's thinner & mixes easier.
DIRECTIONS: Add 1/2 cup salt to bowl. If adding wet colorant, add it first. I recommend using a gel color as they're drier than liquid colorants & are less likely to over-wet the salts. Mix until the color is even. Prepare the base in different bowl: add your dry powder to a bowl & add wet ingredients. ***Replace 1/8 - 1/4 of the total wet ingredients amount with an emulsifier. An emulsifier makes the oil mix with water. Without it, the fragrance oil will sit & pool on top the water. If you're adding really dark mica or color powder, you'll need more emulsifier (but that's another tutorial). High-quality fragrance oils are recommended because a little goes a long way, they smell stronger, they smell better (closer to the original scent), & they last longer. I used magnolia blush. These are high-quality fragrance oils that would be perfect for this project: Bombshell, Daisy (Marc Jacobs), Beautiful Day, Cool Waters, ***Magnolia Blush. Find them here: Naturesoil.com?ref=doralincoln Mix everything together well with your hands. Make sure everything is fully incorporated. The base powder should be dry to the touch. Add it to the salt & mix it together until the salt is evenly coated. Once everything is mixed, test the salt. Squeeze the salt tightly then release. If the salt freely flows then its ready. But if it forms clumps you need to add more salt (or less scented base). Once the salt is ready you can add powder color &/or mica. This recipe makes exactly one 3.5 oz bottle (as show in video). Salts should last up to one year. Run your bath then pour the salts in. Then sit back, close your eyes, take in the scent, soak in the warm salt water bath, & relax… As tempting as it may be - don’t fall asleep!
***** You can also start with scented salts. I purchased eucalyptus & lavender Epsom salts. They have a subtle scent that doesn't interfere with my own scent. Plus, they're about the same price.
