I mix plantain with yarrow and add a few drops of lavender essential oil. Also if you dry the leaves first the moisture level will be lower therefore it will stay good for a lot longer. Good video mate 👍

Hi there, thanks for your comment. Drying herbs certainly helps to conserve them, but while drying, most active ingredients do either decompose or are evaporating with the plant saps themselves. In my opinion it is best to immediately process the freshly harvested or foraged herbs for the best results. :) What are you using the yarrow for? I only use that as an emergency medicine for cuts and comparable injuries, not in ointments though. Cheers!
@albaoutdoors7462
5 жыл бұрын
Rathwulven Bushcraft apologies for the delayed reply, I add yarrow to the salves due to its would healing abilities notably stopping bleeding to help seal the wound and reduce infection chance. Good point on the dried leaves losing some of their effectiveness I mainly use fresh leaves because they are readily available but salves from dried leaves will extend the salves shelf life.

Can I make aloe vera ointment?
@RathwulvenBushcraft
3 жыл бұрын
Hi April - yes, you can. :) But I would recommend to not use any wax at all. Aloe already contains a rather thick type of sap and you can better pasteurize a glass and fill it with pure aloe sap to use as a remedy. :)

For a good ointment consistency how many mL of bee wax and oil can be used?...and after adding that how many grams of ointment we get
@nancycardenas4008

So I needed to make this with comfrey because my son fractured his arm and it will be a week until we get into an orthopedic. It's not bad we went to the ER to make sure. Anyways I have been using essential oils but then decided to do this! I can't find my beeswax and I can't find it at the store. Especially this late at night and I wanted to get going on it. I used lanolin cubes. Is that ok as an emulsifier? Also if I wanted to use essential oils, like a frankincense or helichrysum would I out them in with the herbs or after? I wasn't sure if it changed the oils being warm or hot?
@RathwulvenBushcraft
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nancy, thanks for the comment. In order to buy bees wax, it is best to check with your local beekeepers. As far as essential oils go I cannot tell you much as I am solely educated in the field of phytotherapeutic use of plants - so in the scientific field rather than the “alternative” field of medicine. I never tried the lanolin but it should work in my opinion. Did you try that already? If so I am curious about your findings.

Instead of olive oil could you melt lard on low heat add herbs simmer on low for a hour or so then strain and use it as a ointment?
@vikingsong2068
Жыл бұрын
It probably won't smell particularly nice, but I should imagine that would work. Lard is fat after all. Sunflower and linseed oil would work (and smell better) too.
@RathwulvenBushcraft

Interesting question - I guess that would stink a lot tbh. Also lard is an animal-based product so more inclined to rot quickly I presume.

@RathwulvenBushcraft
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback & great question. Never tried olive oil, but from my rather rudimentary understanding of chemistry most compounds like flavonoids, tannins and what not are lipophiles, so "fat-loving". Should work. If you want to get sure, try checking out whether the respective agent in a herb is a lipophile or hydrophile compound.

@RathwulvenBushcraft
2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, sorry for the late reply but let me try to help: Depends on why your skin is dry. If it is just due to hydration issues, you simply should drink more water and then look at herbs. Calendula and licorice should work, maybe helychrisum. Otherwise I suggest consulting a dermatologist just to be sure
