This is how I made this jewelry box where I engraved the name of the recipient. The name was then filled with white epoxy. As with all types of woodwork, there was a lot of sanding. Especially to get rid of the epoxy, so be careful not to take too much. But remember that some of the epoxy goes down into the wood and it gets smaller when it hardens so you have to have a little over the actual engraving.
This is a great way to create a personal touch on something you make without the need for an expensive CNC engraver. I just printed the text on plain paper and glued it with a glue stick to the wood. You could have started engraving already there, but I did a test and found that the engraving went easier if I removed the paper where I was going to engrave. So I cut this out with a sharp knife.
I am not an epoxy specialist, but I think you can use all types of epoxy for this as it is a very shallow cut. As long as it flows well into all the tracks, it should work, I think. But feel free to comment if I'm wrong here.
The wood I used is quite an ordinary molding of Oak, for bottom and top I used an extra-wide molding I got.
