I love your videos for so many reasons. One, you're just a regular dude teaching others how to diy. Two, you show when you make mistakes, which I think is great for the learning process. Three, the fact that you put the narrative in the description is so inclusive to those with hearing problems/deafness. Four, I think it's sweet how much you obviously care for your girlfriend. 😊 You're the best, man.

Is there anything you can't do? I actually went to school for 3 years to learn jewellery making, and things got a bit more complicated there. I have two tips: when you solder silver, don't point the flame directly at the solder, but warm the entire piece first and move the flame around. Solder flows towards heat, and if the piece of solder is the hottest point, it won't flow properly. Also, you'll end up melting the piece. Another tip is to put the piece after soldering to a cup of warm citric acid solution to remove the dark fire scale left from fluxing and heating. You'll end up with a clean piece which is easier to polish, and won't ruin your files (flux is like glass after soldering). Don't put anything with steel (or iron) in the citric acid solution, or it will get ruined. Great video!

Cool tips! I hope I’m not being a bother by asking but can I ask what made you go to school for jewelry making and if you think it’s worth it? Just wondering, as I’ve been making jewelry for a while and never really considered actually going to school for it until just now haha.
@Leena79
5 жыл бұрын
@@tylerburney8576 Where I live (Finland), we have a long tradition of gold smith education, and the field is quite regulated. I happen to live close to a respected school. I started doing jewellery on my own, but I figured I could actually become a "real" jewellery smith and turn it into a small business, which I did. I think I've learnt more on my own than in school, but I guess it was worth the time to learn to do things "the right way"- and it didn't cost me anything. It's definately possible to learn making jewellery on your own or through shorter courses, but around here, people value degrees and titles, and they are impressed to hear I went to school for this - which often helps with selling stuff.

Your solder did not flow the first time because there was firescale (the black stuff on your metal from heating it that you referred to as fire stain) on the metal, the flux probably would have worked if your metal was cleaner!! Using a toothbrush and some soap to clean the metal would help, ideally pickling the metal after applying heat. Also if you apply the solder while the flux is still wet it should essentially hold it in place before melting. AND applying flux to your entire piece will help lessen the firescale :)

@@Shmoxd I'm not sure what flux you originally used, but any flux should work (though I cannot peak on flux used on electronics, i would think that its just a lower grade but i dunno). would just stick with handy flux if you're just soldering jewelry as an occasional hobby. Its a go to for hobbyist jewelers because its cheap and decent. There are definitely different types of flux, like handy flux is a borax-based compound that provides substantial oxide protection but often leafs a tough glassy skin often referred to as "flux glass" but that's easily removed with pickling and/or filing and sanding.

My two cents: You may want to use a piece of cloth between the block and use a leather covered hammer as you can transfer impurities onto your silver - when you solder, it'll include the impurities affecting the longevity and maintenance of the ring. More important for 925. Also easier soldering process in general. The leather can also help prevent unwanted marking and nicking on your metal.

Hey, if you dip your piece of solder in to the flux first, then place it on the ring, it should stay on the ring better. The solder will naturally ball up first, then as it gets to melting point, it will flow in to the seam. Another tip is to heat the ring evenly throughout, then focus on where you want to solder.
