Wow! Good job. I am a Jewish girl that loves baking challah and definitely I am going to try this recipe replacing butter for a good vegetable spread. I have to do that because we don’t mix dairy and meat in the same meal. I loved the way you’ve showed how to prepare the strands, they look very strong. I am going to use this technique and see if I have less breakage in my braids.

Normally Jews wouldn't use butter as Challa is used on Shabbat, where most families most likely would have a meaty dinner on Friday night and a meaty lunch on Saturday. And as we know dairy and meat shall not be eaten together. Rapeseed or sunflower oil will do. Another thing is, that you need at least two loafs for the Kiddush that is done previous to each Shabbat meal. Beside that the video is really nice!

If you’re going to make JEWISH challah bread, you need to “take challah.” Also, not all challah is sweet and eggy and it most certainly doesn’t contain butter because challah is ALWAYS pareve (even in vegetarian households), yet you persist in emphasizing the butter. Regardless, it’s a nice demo and a beautiful result but you really need to call it “sweet egg bread” or “bread made from plaited, enriched dough” or some such because that’s NOT challah. A braid/plait/whatever does not a challah make.

HotVoodooWitch, no dear, he doesn’t have to take challah from his dough for he is not Jewish, that is the Halacha. And he doesn’t need a pareve challah either for the same reason. He did an amazing job and , as a Jewish girl, I did appreciate what he did and how respectful he was about our traditions.

you could be less mean, tbh but you are kind of correct that he is making more of a swedish zopf than a jewish challah
@HotVoodooWitch

@@danielasoibelman7555 well then, it’s not challah, is it? Calling it that is misleading.

@@ibnyahud thank you. It’s not my intention to be mean but the taking of challah is a commandment in our religion. Calling something “challah” that isn’t trivializes something that’s actually sacred.

nice job. I have been making Cholla for years and its a great bread for beginners because it always comes out good. It does make the best tasting French toast. the reason it is braided is so you can tear the bread apart like buns,.Bon.

Interesting... less sweeter then challah, I might give this a go.. my husband would enjoy a less sweeter challah. Never used a baking stone for the challah, sounds like a great idea. With the addition of butter you will want to make sure those coming for dinner are not worried about dairy & meat, if so would have to be served with a vegetarian foods, or you would need to use a butter substitute. I usually make with olive oil, but the butter would wonderfully be enriching, I will give this a go & see if the family like it!

Thank You for sharing your great Heritage (5th Generation - Incredible) and Love of Baking with others ! I subscribed just days ago and have watched 7+ already - enjoy the wonderful English Countryside and Villages "towns" in your videos as well :) One question, I am considering switching to using all " starter" for my breads/baked goods -since commercial yeast did not originate until the 1920's if I am correct - would it be possible to get a good result with a Jewish "starter" for this bread ?

Challah is mentioned in the Tanach(the Jewish Bible) as the bread for Shabbat. It is not made with butter since milk and meat are not mixed. It has nothing to do with Jesus . It is entirely related to the Jews. If others wish to make a plaited loaf that is fine but it is not Challah.

You didnt do this right, you never put butter in challah, you put sunflower oil or olive oil, that because we the jewish are making challah for shabat dinner, and we eat challah with meat, and we cant eat meat and milk thougter cause its not kosher. So next time you bake challah, you put oil noy butter.

I feel like others commenters: 1-,Challah has not butter, so don’t call it that. Is a good vídeo but 2-After waiting so long by watching the video I was expecting to see the grand result of the bread , inside and outside, meaning I would have liked to see the crumb of the bread but was not shown as other videos do when making bread. Is the most important thing when making bread to see the inside crumb by cutting as he did and then focusing the camera on it which he din’t🎥
