Thank you so much!!! I asked one seller how he made his and he was very secretive. I don't know why... As you said you have to invest thousands of dollars to make any kind of commercially viable set up to do these on a massive scale At least with competition in mind for him ya know? I really appreciate this!!!

Very cool, I've wondered how to make sturdier crystals. For staining, keep a solution of sodium thiosulfate or some other reducer to rinse the skin if contact is made with the silver nitrate solution.

Great info there. Thank you for posting and giving such thoughtful commentary. > If we have conducted a successful copper crystallization; would you say we have the knowledge to attempt the silver crystals? We have all the materials, the only worry is I don't want to end up with expensive liquid silver waste material.
@Puddin
3 жыл бұрын
Sure, though I would certainly give it a go with copper first as it is just cheaper to learn on. The silver nitrate in the liquid is by no means waste however. Once you are done with the solution you can put it over a low heat to make it all steamy. Don't boil it though. Keep it warm until it dries out and you are left with a white powder. You can keep it as is for another run where you just need to add water or you can throw it all into a crucible and melt it back into metal silver.

I wonder if the crystals are growing smaller because 1: There are more growth sites and so power consumption is being distributed amongst them, and 2: The crystals are growing closer to the anode and are receiving more energy and therefore more silver is deposited at their nearest point to the anode. However this point becomes smaller and smaller because it is taking the path of least resistance. The larger the object the energy has to travel through, the more the resistance. Just a guess.

The reason there is a size difference is because the distance between where the power is coming from and being deposited it is getting closer to the positive therefore they deposit faster which means smaller molecules can stick easier when it was having to travel that distance it took more molecules collectively to create enough amperage to be deposited it's the same concept as load on line and no I did not typos that there's not supposed to be a single word for on line it's an electricity term.

@Puddin

Normally you wouldn't unless you just really needed it in crystal form. This was just to show the process of growing the crystals. Usually you would go through this process first to purify the silver, then turn it into a bar.

Yep I was able to recover all of the silver. A lot of it I left in nitrate form (because it is more expensive than just silver) and the rest I threw in a crucible, heated it until it turned back to metallic silver and poured some water shot

Perhaps you could Silver solder a portion of silver wire to your ingot? Then your alligator clamp could be as far away from the solution as you choose. With the wire bent over the rim and the clamp attached in the same manner as your cathode clamp, wouldn't that eliminate (or limit) the iron contamination? Could your test your nitric acid hypothesis by continuously adding the tiniest bit of acid, to see if large crystals continue to propagate?

I'm just curious, it looks like your doing this inside and not outside in the open and/or a well ventilated area. Nitric acid dissolving gold or silver creates a lot of beyond poisonous Nitrogen dioxide gas which is just terrifying stuff so if anyone follows this, they should absolutely do it in a fume hood which 99% of people don't have access too or outside in a extremely well ventilated area. I have a friend who made this mistake once and is paying the price with the rest of his life, however long that maybe
