@DroneMinds
7 жыл бұрын
Oh, I wasn't comparing it to agfisoft, the pro version of that is expensive too. I just wondered if pix4d had a cheaper version with less functions? Obviously if your business is big enough and you have the clients paying then it doesn't matter. I was just thinking of the little guy wanting to give this a try. I think it will get cheaper anyway as it becomes more widespread and known, more people will make software that does similar things and more easily so more people can get involved. There are a lot of people that still don't know about this software and technology, don't know it's even possible. It's amazing really, I love it

GM6 Drone Mapping Both please. I have heard about Areopoints and then I heard you don’t need them. What would you buy if you had twenty grand to spend?
@GM6DroneMapping
5 жыл бұрын
@@pak0033 Very good question. I would not consider myself cheap but I do not want to spend unnecessarily. I have 4.5 drones. One is being built slowly. 3 muti rotor and 1 fixed wing. 99% of the time I use my P4P and have mapped MILES with it. The plane is good for large areas of 300 acres to a few square miles. The key is to have only what you need and a backup. Anything more is a waste. Having money to buy more if you need it is more valuable than extra anything. Areopoints are nice but a set of Emlid Reach will cost a fraction of AP and when used as a set of 2 in RTK mode, will be more accurate than you need for 99.9% of your jobs. If you map areas with high wind then get a drone suited for high winds. Other than that, the P4P has a great camera for the price. Next, don’t skimp on processing power. A decent gaming desktop not laptop with room to make upgrades as needed. Minimum 8 core processor the more cores the better. You can rent the software (pix4d or reality capture) when business picks up or gets steady, BUY Agisoft. Its cheaper in the long run, and it’s better. Or buy it now but do what makes sense for you now. Get skywatchai insurance monthly (as you need it) some months you may not need it. Learn how to market and budget some money for that. Get a decent website and put AS much of the left-over funds in the bank to use as needed. You will need the capital. I could probably write a book titled "What NOT to do when starting a drone business" This advice is free but solid. Oh one more tip. Keep asking for advice from people and learn from their mistakes....

If you plan to make money doing drone mapping, you might want to check your state regulations and licensing before investing too much money. In many states you have to be licensed as a photogrammetrist or surveyor, especially if it's used for design by engineers.
@GM6DroneMapping
7 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I have never heard that about the photogrammetrist. In Texas, that's not the case. However a certified or licensed surveyor does have to sign off on your map if it is for an official survey. But the project I referred to here was surveyed by a ground crew. We are simply processing the aerial data for a client, who wants to track the progress of the construction.
@tybrady
7 жыл бұрын
I think the reasoning behind it is, if it could affect public safety/ public investment of infrastructure, they want it done by someone licensed. So I imagine mapping for i.e. GIS where it's just for informational purposes is OK.
@GM6DroneMapping
7 жыл бұрын
Ty's Videos I get your your point.. I may need to think of a way to be more clear in my monologue. Im bad about that. ha Are you a surveyor?
@tybrady
7 жыл бұрын
I thought your monologue was great. It's an interesting subject for me and I know a lot of new drone businesses are looking for other ways to make money. They just don't realize that they might need to be licensed. I'd hate for them to spend ten thousand dollars or more for the expensive software/ hardware and other things needed only to find out later they are not allowed to do it. I'm a surveyor in Virginia. In Virginia right now the State Code says, anyone can do mapping (with the exception of), ---"provided such maps or other documents shall not be used for the design, modification, or construction of improvements to real property or for flood plain determination".----- Which makes sense from a public safety point of view. I do realize my point of view is biased. However, there is a chance the State Code will be changing in another year to read like this: ----"Persons utilizing photogrammetric methods or similar remote sensing technology shall be required to be licensed as a land surveyor to (i) determine topography or contours or (ii) depict physical improvements."----- Which pretty much covers any type of commercial mapping if it utilizes photogrammetric methods. Seems like that is a little too far since it appears to also cover mapping for informational purposes only. Though I'm not sure what type of market would exist for mapping that is not used by engineers and is only for informational purposes. Mapping for larger acreage, i.e. GIS, that is probably too large for a drone to do, is done with a conventional airplane and those guys are all licensed photgrammetrists. (GIS mapping is for informational purposes.)

Ty's Videos Thanks Ty, I love how thorough you are. You make a great point. One of the reasons I started this channel is to share the information. Your input is a big help to let others know the importance of due diligence starting a business like this. This project Im talking about in this video cost several million dollars. We are working with engineers to do things the traditional way. Your point makes me realize I should put more emphasis on a disclaimer.
