The biggest cost with raising chickens is feed. You can cut your feed down by 3/4 conservatively. Look up composting chickens and black fly larvae. Integrating those two system not only cuts your cost but helps make more money with the other two products and your chickens will have a more diversity of food and extra protein. Hence healthier chickens

Use a worm bin to grow worms, do black soldier fly bin, grow sun flowers also well. Build compost piles in the run to bring bugs in. I bought 10 chicks at 3.50 each. Have been feeding them for 8 months. They are just now producing small eggs. About 2 months ago I bought 20 chickens at point of lay for 4.50 each and was producing 15 to 20 eggs a day from the first day. In my estimation, it was much cheaper to buy chickens for 1.00 more each than to feed them for 8 months without anything to show for it. I am getting 1.5 to 2 dozen per day and selling the eggs (Jumbo's) at 4.00 per dozen

I ordered 65 chicks and sold 3/4 of them.. it was profitable.. we are going to breed, hatch and sell a few rare breeds including Easter eggers, this next season.. 😬 I pray it goes as planned.. we also plan on selling rainbow hatching eggs in the future as we now hv Easter eggers, black copper Marans, welsummers, whiting true green and whiting true blues.. just need a couple more roosters 😊 Thank you for helping our family make a little money..

Remember to supplement your chickens from all other aspects of your farm. The biggest cost is food so we pull from the garden, kitchen left overs, grass clippings, extra dairy, and we pasture them and let them devour all the grass they can eat. Also taking the time to do fodder can triple the output of your grain feed.

We also mix our own grain mix( whole grains are cheap) and use garden waste, mustard greens grow very well here, you can only eat and sell so much! Dude i love your videos, I'll share a little bit about what I do. All I do is breed 3 to 4 different egg laying breeds, in medium sized Flocks. I sell their fertilized eggs on ebay and i sell young hens locally off craigslist, the key is to sell them way before point of lay at 15$ or better. I post them up for sale as soon as they're feathered out or at 3-4 months old the latest. I been doing this a while now. I use the chicken income to buy feed, in bulk for all my animals and by animals i mean we have 9 dogs 3 goats and anywhere between 2 to -300 chickens at any giving time, I have not come out of pocket to buy feed in over 2 years i'd say My chickens bring in between 3000 and 5000$ a year the funny thing is the chickens keep the lights on and feed the dogs and you don't even want to know what the dogs bring in you wouldn't believe me lol that's another story thank you so much for reading best of luck to you again love your videos.

If you are in a urban setting if you get your food from free food scraps from grocery stores etc and purchase more than half your flock as Easter Eggers and olive Eggers (about 25-50 hens lay decent), save the eggs for a Friday egg sale.... you can charge $8+ a dozen for green eggs to Ritzy whole foods urban moms. Having a egg sale on Fridays or whatever day....holds back the product enough to have a lil egg sale and create a feeling that people have to go to you on a certain day otherwise they won't get them.... And alot of the times people will sign up for a waiting list. I can't keep green eggs on the shelf. And in the end your sales can pay for their feed....if it's not that profitable certain months...and saved money is made money in my eyes. I worked on a small farm in California in a urban city and urbanites would line up for fresh backyard eggs. So there is a business there...... At least a small business to help pay for their food. In Iowa you couldn't charge that much. Everyone's got chickens. But in the Bay area rich people in Tesla's will pay alot of money for green/blue eggs (novelty) and take their kids in the chicken coop to see the chickens. I've found you are selling an experience not just the eggs. Then you can make a lil cash....like I said at least be in the black and pay for their feed.

Love this video! This is kind of my plan. I sell plant starts and some produce and some crafts at a local farmers market. This year I will add surplus eggs. I have had chickens in the past and am doing them again this year. The local feed store asked if I would be willing to sell chickens on Saturdays. I order them in larger groups, and sell them. I am not making much money, but this is offsetting my feed cost. So I get all the enjoyment of raising them, get to keep what I want at the end of the baby chick season, and selling a few along the way helps to offset my cost. In addition I have connected with a couple of people who have larger operations and are willing to buy all the birds I have left in surplus at he end of season! 😲. I hope it will work out... trouble might be that I am getting attached.

I've been told you need to view eggs as a loss leader to bulk out your small farm shop. If you can break even, it's better. The idea being, if you have more of what people want, they are more likely to buy from you since there are less places they need to visit Also you can have a steady amount of eggs if you start layers in May and November instead of just once per year.

Since I was overwhelmed with sale requests I couldn't support, I had to take my white, brown and green eggs to my mother, who paid me $1.25 per dozen for the whole paper bag. I have never heard raising 30 hens to lay and then selling 15. Intriguing idea. Thank you!
@Aziara86

I do like this idea. I do have an add on... Now, this will only work if you have a rooster. Instead of just selling the excess eggs, incubate them. Then you can either sell them when they hatch for $3-6 each, (around here a dozen eggs go for $2-3, so a much bigger profit margin even if only 50% hatch in your incubator) or raise them to point of lay and sell them for much more (that's $10 profit from each, if you sell them for $20 and it costs $10 to raise them). Rare breeds will obviously sell for more than more common breeds, and 'barnyard mixes' will sell for less than purebreds.

The feed is key also. You can let them free range or find out where to buy some wheat or corn it’s literally $5 a bushel. (about 60 pounds) After that you’re just supplementing their diet so the only other expense is your time to take care of the chickens, wash and package the eggs, etc. I’ve been running about 20-40 chickens for 10 years now and I’ve been making about $1000 a year🤷🏻♂️

Hello again. With egg laying chicken, one you have to figure out how many chicken you need to supply yourself and sell. Two if you have a farm you must look for economical ways to feed your chickens, eg. grow some corn and soya beans. third find a supermarket that you can get all their vegetable they have to get rid of and feed that to your chicken. now if you have enough chickens then you are making a good supply of manure that you can bagged and sold to others for their flower garden. Any access you use in your garden. Now figure what it cost you for fertilizer for your home garden take that from the cost of raising four chicken add the profit from selling manure and you end up with a much bigger profit that you started with.

Linda Readman This works VERY VERY VERY WELL. Used to deal directly with the restaurants ( and still do on occasion ), but found that pulling the green compost bags directly out of the bins in the EARLY morning, is far more time efficient. As I do not own a vehicle, I take my Gator Cart with Large Rubbermaid or generic tote on the first city bus of the morning (6am week days and Saturday), Race the dump trucks to the best bins and am usually heading home on the 6:30am bus. 7am at the latest. With a vehicle I’d still bring a gator cart / wagon and park the vehicle or have a buddy to meet you at the other end of your route. Minimum tools: sturdy wagon Restaurant pails or Rubbermaid tote ( I prefer totes; more space efficient) Plastic tarp Bungee cords Minimal Reflective leg bands or vest. Small hand soap pump Full water bottle Washable Hand rags or disposable hand towels Good additions: Flash light or better yet head lamp Disposable rubber gloves Winter mitts if in spring, winter of autumn. Hit my stride at full tote load every 2-4 days, depending on the quality of the haul, for as many as 25-30 chickens ( half being juveniles and chicks). TSC feed was the backup. TCS feed worked out to be about 1 bag of layer crumble and 1 Chicken Scratch every 3-3.5 months and 1 chick starter that I never used up. If on sale, I’d buy large bag of mixed wild bird seeds which I’d ferment and or sprout as fodder. Fermentation increases the nutrient bioavailability by as much as 30% Their eggs taste AMAZING. Yokes are SO Dark. Many Repeat Happy Customers at $4 per dozen in carton, $3.50 per dozen in flats. Sold to a little grocery store at $3.50 in cartons and they resold at $6.

My chickens are going to be mainly for keeping the pasture clean, they will eat all the bugs and also take care of the cow patties from the beef. This will reduce the potential for bugs that can cause issues with my other livestock. While they will produce eggs, I don't eat that many eggs so if they sit on them to hatch them out I can either have more chickens, sell the chicks or process some for canning.

A little bit more work, but you now have a preserved product that you can sell all year round and charge higher for it per egg

Aww man no homesteady video today, so I'm watching older videos 😆. It's ok cause I have a tip for you. Btw that little girl of yours is adorable, don't you dare eat her pink egg!!! 😂 I love it! Your truly blessed with that little girl around, she's beautiful! Anyway, how to make money from your birds, this is how we provide for our flock every month. Yeah it cost us a little bit of money, to make money. Ok so when you buy your chickens, make sure to buy an incubator too. Then when you're chickens are older and laying eggs, take their eggs and incubate them. Those chicks that are born, don't sell right away you'll only make a buck a bird, however if you wait a month or two then sell them, still a chick but not fully grown, you can sell them for $25 a bird then. And this is how we make money from our birds, every month I bring in anywhere between $400-1200 extra just from selling teen chicks that's been incubated. Btw I sell them at the livestock auction every month. I'm known at our local stock auction for having healthy birds, who's lives are guaranteed for one month. Basically once they purchase them, if the bird dies in 30 days after purchase, I'll replace the bird and give them their money back, so far that hasn't happened. But this is how I get 25 a bird instead of 15 a bird. Just a suggestion of course. Find a local livestock auction and incubate your eggs every month. Your 1st hatch eggs will pay for the incubator+ some. So definitely worth it! Just a suggestion take it or leave it. Love the video of course, even though it's old, lol. But had to get my after work homesteady fix! 😂 God bless guys, see you in tomorrow's videos!

I had 15 hens that lay one egg each.i sell the eggs to friends at work before..and it was good enough for their chicken feeds and others..

my question is would it be more profitable to just buy from a hatchery to raise point of lay chickens, or would it be better to take those 15 extra hens and add two roosters to make a chicken breeding system to sell chicks/point of lay chickens.

That is IF they all lay eggs everyday! We have Black Marans, Golden Comet, Golden Wyandotte, Black Australorps, 16 hens all together and during the winter we are lucky to have 1 egg a day! We are in Eastern Washington...Even when the weather turned warm to the 50s, yesterday and today, we got 2 eggs

"rainbow" eggs seem to be a big hit in the suburbs right now.... So having a mixed flock seems to be smart right now. Honestly though I think the major win with raising chickens is you know how healthy and clean they are.

If chickens live for 7-8 years on average then the next year you could sell all the chickens as you will most likely still have the 15 chickens from last year. Or dose "point of lay" only last a curtain amount of time?

I feel that providing capons is a very good way to add value to chicken farming. Eggs might ... might help with feed costs and help feed the family. Capons sell at a super-premium price and I found it very easy to establish my customer base at high-end eateries at some of the local ski resorts. Just a thought.

I currently run a egg business. Usually at the end of the month I brake even. I started making money in aug/Sept because my April chicks started laying and I was able to sell to a local baker what I had left over after selling to monthly buyers. Nov/dec have been rough. With molting, egg production is down. Sales are down and expenses stay the same.

If small farmers have the money to build multiple pens and separate by breed than you are really in business! Here’s the cost: 4 10x10 pens $600, 4 chicken breeds $150 , 2 incubators $337.23, and chicken houses made out of refurbished wood of the old barn $0. Cost me little over a thousand to build that and to feed 26 chickens a month cost me about $45 dollars because I grow a lot of there food. I also let each group out at different times of the day so there is no mixing. I sell baby chicks regularly, and I also keep a lot of birds till the point of lay. It’s taken me almost a year but I’ve slowly made that money back that I’ve spent in the beginning Next year should be full profit!

Get an incubator or maybe two. Hatch half your eggs. Sell the chicks for $3 to $4 each, or raise them to point-of-lay and sell them then. That's what I do and I haven't had to "buy" a chicken in over 3 years. Also, grow wheat grass to supplement your chicken feed. It will save a ton of money.

1, I'm going to try that. 2, what type of organic feed do you buy? Is it several bags you mix, or pelleted feed? 3, I purchased 4 turkey's to sell around Thanksgiving and 2 were deformed (couldn't walk) and I had to cull them. I called the feed store (really great family owned local store) and they didn't guarantee their birds. I was pretty bummed. BUT I still want to purchase birds next year, maybe from an online hatchery and get more turkeys next time to guarantee I'll have the amount I'd like figuring in a few that don't make it.

oh forgot to add....If I am planning on keeping some hatchlings for myself, I keep them from the first eggs I put in the incubator for the yr...I always get first choice lol. also, I do raise some so that come spring, I have some hens ready to sell that are almost ready to start laying. that $30 it took to raise a hen and rooster to almost laying age, sells for $150.00 for the pair! again depending on the bred you choose. I do not do this with the cheaper birds that I have...only my big ticket money making breeds! That starts the season out great when you sell 10 breeding pairs! also, I cut my feed costs everyway that I can, from black soldier fly boxes, to chicken tractors, grow certain veggies just for the chickens, red wiggler worm bins, used egg shells baked and crushed for calcium, kitchen scraps, compost piles, under rabbit scratching for bugs n worms, ,extra goats milk, if an egg accidentally gets cracked, it goes into the freezer in a ziploc bag added with anymore cracked eggs, then into the frying pan once baggy is full, and the chickens get fried scrambled eggs, you name it. none of which takes much time to do, all of which cuts feed costs.

You can get them to laying age a lot cheaper. I have 17 that I got to laying age for less than $100 dollars if you already have the equipment. Rural King puts baby chicks on sale for $1 after they get about 5 days old and that's about $19. $4 shavings = $23. 3 bags of starter/grower $12 tax include 23+36=$59. 1 bag of corn $8 1 layer $10 so $18+59=$77. That's not counting electricity to the heat lamp, and I bought them in early May and I live in the south so I could move them outside at 5 weeks I'm guessing $10 electricity. $87 total for 17 laying age chickens at 21 weeks. Hope that helps you get a picture of just how cheaply you can raise them.

You could probably charge more than $20. Look at what people will pay at a hatchery plus shipping. Plus, you can advertise them as Organic, GMO-free, pastured/free range hens ready to lay and give you approx 750 eggs over the next three years! (Math according to breed of course ;) ) That's roughly $250 in Organic Egg savings (again varies by region, then factor feed costs, etc) I'm just saying.... you can really sell these lovely ladies. I'd probably list them $30 each or $50 for two... or maybe more. Offer the service of picking two hens that get along well, etc. Do the math, sell the savings, write up a nice add.

let the people that buy the eggs bring you left overs from their kitchen. thats works great for a friend. the most people from his block who are buying the eggs dont waste food on the compost. they bring it to him. that way they also know what the chickens were fed, see the animals and their kids see where their food comes from. but dont allow them to throw it in when ever they want and tell them what you can use and what they should not bring you. so you know how much is fed and everything will be eaten and not rot there.

Confirmed what I have been running for my numbers. It's almost comical. My tabulation/plan ran the same track and came within $200 of yours per annum. You said it, my feed is cheaper and I bought birds that produce closer to 300 per year. I found that selling the point of lay hens is not as easy as one would think, but I am still new to this. An interesting an none the less, that I am forced to implement.

hello I have watched your videos for some time now and really enjoy the information that you provide . My family and I are planning on moving out to the country on 25 acres of irrigated land . We have 7 kids and are wanting to get chickens and 1 bull and 2 cows for breeding and meat and 1 Hersey cow for milk . I'm not sure how many chickens we would need for eggs and meat . Just trying to gather information ahead of time so that we can have an idea of what we need .

Winter eggs - you need new chicks in June. That way, when your other hens shut down for the season/short daylight days, the new chicks will be producing eggs for those customers. Otherwise, tell your customers you're on hold until February. If they really prefer home grown/natural raised eggs, they'll be back with you.

Great vid! Gave me more to think about as I am looking to double the size of my flock from 4 hens to 8 hens. This winter I got very few eggs so I am hope to do better this spring. I had people last year asking me if they could buy some of my eggs and I just could not get enough eggs to meet the demand. :-( This year I hope to have more eggs from more hens. I have also been thinking of getting a couple of ducks..... Thanks again for a great vid and God Bless!!

I never had a problem with my chickens stopping laying in the winter and we never had a light for them. The only problem I had when I had them was the water freezing and the ground being soggy and muddy right in front of the gate. We had a nice old lady down the street who would give me $5 a week for the eggs they laid. We got almost as many eggs a day as we had chickens, all year long and we never knew what to do with them all so we would give some of them back to them and only use the freshest ones. I miss them. My goats were housed with them and they broke the gate latch and I went to take care of my chickens one morning and all I found were piles of feathers going into the woods. I went from 12 chickens down to nothing in one night.

I love in the boonies and it is impossible to sell eggs. I would have to drive over 2 hours to the city to sell. Last year though I decided I didn't like RIR chickens and decided to sell them. Has a dozen RIR, plus over 20 other breeds. I sold a bunch of them so I did make a little money off them.
