Thanks for the breakdown! Learned some great things. To address the first point: Peterson is an avid thinker and I'm not sure if he's consciously doing the "That's a good point" technique. I rather believe that to arrive at a conclusion he really believes in, he has this internal dialogue with himself, where he plays both sides of the argument. That also ties into the "you"s and hypotheticals that he uses, as these are his habits of discussing with himself. It's like a constant training for your brain to switch from perspective to perspective in an argument, which is now ingrained into him. That's how he's able to say "That's a good point" with conviction as it is something he has seriously considered before judging.

But things I heard from Peterson so far (capitalism as a good efficient system, veganism as cult, and he being "a believer") are wrong, I can't believe people change their mind to *that* kind of thinking/ideas/interpretations... He is a good speaker, maybe born maybe learnt, but he is wrong (on the subjects I heard him talk).

I have this saved on one of my playlists, I think it is very insightful. I think we can put it into practice best by embracing the principals and honing our character. I think the principals are a respect and genuine care for all people and an empathy with their journey of trying to understand life. If this was taken as tools and techniques to gain respect and change peoples minds then it misses the point and people will see through it. I’ve heard people teach ways of showing that you are listening, leaning in, nodding head occasionally etc. Then I heard someone cut through all that who said, ‘ never mind trying to look like you are listening, just really listen and concentrate on trying to understand.’, concentrating on caring for someone else.

In a world where most people are trying to "one up" the other person, JP is trying to educate AND better the world around him; he's doing that by making each person to be responsible about their own lives and with time they will improve their families, friends, communities. To point 1, my philosophy: If I can't argue FOR my opposition, then I can't argue AGAINST them. Seeing where they come from is necessary to connect, but it's also a safeguard for your personal beliefs. If they're not worthy of being challenged, then they're not worthy of having, let alone sharing. I have massive respect for Peterson specifically because he's so calm and gracious whenever he can and should be, but he refrains from being a pushover. He can empathize and still disagree knowing his position better precisely because he's familiar with the opposite opinion.

Don't mistake respect with fear. Fear can only keep people in line as long as it persists. Respect does not need constant show of force if even at all. That is why those who fear you, will betray you the moment there is nothing more to deter them. Those who respect you, will stay loyal or at least neutral.
@ChocolateChipcookiie
Жыл бұрын
Fear and respect do go hand in hand, however it's not as simple as it sounds. Fear(itself) is not respect as it invokes pressure and an uncomfortable, defensive yet cautious mindset into people. When feared, people listen to you indefinitely to avoid confrontation and truthfully lack affection and *Respect* towards you. Respect is when someone projects your worth and has affection for you because they feel you are affectionate towards them yet they *Fear* the absence of your affection for them. I respect God so I hold fear towards him. Fear is the absence of respect. Respect is the absence of hatred.

TLDR: Pacing your listener's reality is tiring, especially if you have to talk to a lot of people who disagree with you the same way. It's been nearly a year since this video came out. Relative to the older clips seen in this video, what I observe in Jordan's recent conversations is that he hasn't been doing as good a job at point 1 here, pacing his questioner's reality. I think this is to be expected; he's become used to hearing the same story from the people who disagree with him, and is fatigued from pacing it in the same way every time, and so it's become his habit to spout off the phrase "corrupt patriarchal tyranny" and "marxist post-modernist" as shorthand. Even if he means a specific thing every time he uses that kind of shorthand, it can start to be seen as just a standard talking point and thus lose all its intended explanatory force. It takes a lot of effort to keep pacing your listener's reality.
@alma8508
5 жыл бұрын

That seems to be Peterson's M.O. I cannot agree with most of the posters here. I think that Peterson is a skillful communicator using smart communication tools to make his points and garner respect from the listeners, but I sense that he actually has very little respect for most other people. I get a feeling that he sees himself as having a vastly superior intellect and has to dummy himself down to make himself understood and his points accepted by the masses who are inferior to him. When have you ever heard him genuinely appear to be changing his position? Even when he claims to have learned something, he makes it appear that he has been right all along. He is well practiced at his techniques, but I don't think that the interest he conveys in others in these televised interviews or the rest of us is genuine.

But, sadly to say, many people are not as well read as Peterson and do not possess the knowledge and/or reasoning to discuss intelligently to topic at hand. He discusses things from a point of strength because he knows the subject matter; not just opinion that may be based in ignorance. Opinions are like noses; everyone has one.

I would beg to differ people respect the ability of the bully to inflict pain suffering and reduced quality of life. This is how we know to avoid scum like this throughout our lives. The bully represents the microcosm of the negative aspects of society as a whole and is a valuable part of the growth of truly powerful and effective people.

Jordon Peterson is actively helping young people to think in other ways so he is polite and patient as they work things through - that is his job and also his personality goes with such behaviour. But there is great value in watching these misguided females acting stupidly and NOT helping them out - the interviewing guy with the two college girls is NOT trying to change their mind - he is showing behaviours that many people would not like to imitate. He is "talking to the audience" and saying "Is this what YOU want to be?" There can be no true comparison here because there are obviously different agendas. When I started watching such quick probing interviews I myself was often astounded at the weird thought processes that go on in the heads of young people who have been subjected to propaganda at these colleges. Such intervies are valid, educational and thought provoking ; I would never have believed there were such strange viewpoints if brave people did not go out and question these people who will eventually be involved in our politics and influencing our society. Fair warning. Regards.

In my 30 years teaching and mentoring high IQ young people, the common trait I’ve seen among them is humility. This is because brilliant people realize there is a great deal of information they DON’T know, and arrogance isn’t logical in that situation. (Yes, I like Dr. Peterson 😁.)

I think this is the only video of yours where I disagreed with one of your points. Initially, you say that being aggressive garners respect. But I would say this isn't true; being aggressive gets people to follow you, sure, but fear is the driving force, not respect. Hell, think of school; in my class we would only be quiet for two types of teachers, those who threatened us with extra work, detention, etc.; and those who genuinely interested us and believed in us. We feared the former, but respected the latter.
@InklanUtterfield

Buddy, just who do you think you are to tell me whom I respected and whom I didn't? The definition of respect is, "A feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements." I don't have a narrow view of what 'respect' means, I just know it's definition. I can assure you, I most certainly did *not* respect those teachers of mine, nor did most children in my class, most likely. In fact, let me leave you by quoting Jordan Peterson himself, "You can't force me to respect you; you might be able to force me to *act* like I respect you, but you can't force me to respect you; it's just not possible."
@WinsteadB73
6 жыл бұрын
I'm going to have to agree with Kyle White on this. I don't know where you got your definition, but respect doesn't necessarily have to do with admiration. Were you quiet in the class where the teacher threatened extra work? Then you respected the teacher's wishes. You may not have admired that teacher, but you knew if you interfered with their wishes there would be consequences. Consider the drill sergeant who commands respect from soldiers, not necessarily because they admire the sergeant, but they know that to go against the sergeant is costly. My dictionary defines respect as (vt) "to consider worthy of high regard" and (n) "high or special regard". Regard is not the same as admiration. Regard is more akin to attention and consideration. You pay attention when the bully walks in. So you can respect someone you don't admire. Nothing in the definition about deep admiration. It's a less emotional term. I realize it's used in a positive sense most often, referring to someone you approve of, but that is not the only form of respect.
@InklanUtterfield

Regard is not the same as attention or consideration. And fear is not the same thing as respect. You can be sure that the Jews in WW2 feared the Nazis and most did what they told them to, but you can also be damn sure that not a single one of those Jews held the Nazis in high regard. You seem to think that I believe you can't respect someone you dislike but that's not what I'm saying. I don't like Ed Sheeran's music but I respect that he writes his own songs and thinks of music as an art and not a business. Conversely, I appreciate what the police stand for, but I don't respect someone who does it just for the money. Just because someone is in a position of power does not mean he is automatically respected because respect is earned. Just look at Trump.

All good points - everything is correct, but there is one thing that was left out that Peterson should do better, do much, much better, and that is to develop a better 'framework' for his argument. You might mention that stating things in a few words is about as inspirational as etc. etc., but there is 1) a time and a place for this and should not be ignored as a verbal discussion tool. 2) in ernest, this should be used ALONG WITH using antecdotal stories and support scenarios like Peterson does. 3) In some cases, getting to the point immediately makes a MORE interesting argument (sometimes). The way he should use "stating things in a few words" is to use it to tie a dialog back in to his main point after the accessory explanations are made. Make that 180° and restate and reconfirm the point. Peterson either doesn't understand or just doesn't think - that the listener is "riding on his story and words, and the listener has turned off their internal storyline GPS as it were - and are depending on Peterson to bring them back to the main point. Some don't turn off the GPS because of distrust and that is ok - they make good debaters - but the majority of the people have it off for just that moment. To be fair, he does this 180° action some, but not enough. This is why he comes off as so 'wordy', and the listener may think to themselves once in a while "Ok, enough already, blah, blah, can we wrap this up?" Shakespere said that "brevity is the soul of wit" and the reason this is true is because comedy is exceedingly fragile and has to be done property - timing, inflection, word choice, - and agruably most importantly, to deliver the punch efficiently (perfect amount of words, no fluff). Luckily this matters MUCH less in trying to explain a point and to convince - but the need is always there some and the need is always in the background. In summary, use the interesting side explanations, end them with a 180° - almost every time.

To your point about how Jordan is willing to affirm the valid points his debate opponent makes, I would add that not only does he affirm them, he does so genuinely. He's not just humoring them as a form of manipulation to get the advantage. Those who genuinely are seeking knowledge and understanding can succeed at this tactic; those who are doing it merely to manipulate usually won't have Jordan's success because most people can spot a phony.

Dr Peterson is a psychologist! He knows how to talk. I'm not saying that because we're not psychologists, we can't talk like him. All I'm simply saying, it takes skill, and training, and education. Because when the going gets tough, and you're in the storm, most people will get their emotions involved, and not talk like Dr Peterson.

The most effective way of getting respect is to give respect... not only that, you must give even more respect in order to be able to receive respect from others. That ounce of compassion and empathy is not what many foresee as weakness or vulnerability, it is seen as just the exact opposite. Also keep in mind of the intelligent level of who you're speaking with... some may not have the mental capacity or limitation to progress in the discussion... kind of like the guests on Jerry Springer... beyond reasoning ... just cut bait, count your time as a loss and wish them well in their future endeavors.

I don't know whether it's conscious or not, but Peterson acts as a resonating beacon of empathy, so much to the point that he becomes overwhelmed with emotion while commentating on the human experience. This guy feels everything, probably to the point that he might carry it like a burden, and be a major depressive and little else. But no, turns out he is strong and smart and caring enough to wonder, in his own misery, 'How can I transform this tragedy into a lesson of resillience for my students?' F-ing incredible. People think he's a con artist or a carnival barker of some sort but they don't know what the hell they're talking about. JP - you either get it or you don''t.
