Great video and the first I have seen on making pillar candles. I would like to know if the wick size only depends on the diameter of the pillar mold. I have been trying to make container candles and the wick testing is a pain. I found your website a day ago and I have been studying the website like a book, your website have provided great information.
@HowtomakeCandles_Channel
3 жыл бұрын
Hi and thank you, much appreciated! Pillar candles aren't as finicky when it comes to wicking: it's 90% the diameter of the wick that dictates the size of the wick. Of course some other factors can play a part, like the fragrance and (mostly) the dye used. Once you've decided on your wax (probably paraffin as I still have to find a decent pillar soy blend) and mold size, it's unlikely you'll have to play with the wick size again, unless you go heavy on dye and/or fragrance... I have more videos coming about pillar candles so consider subscribing to the channel, if you feel like it :-)

I just have to fix the pillar candles which is showing tunnelling and little bit broken from bottom. So what can I do? Should i remelt the candles or just fix the pillar candles from heat gun? Please guide me. I’m getting the wicks but it’s gonna take a month to get and my customer need it soon

Hey. Absolutely loved the video! One question! Do we need to oil the mould before pouring the wax? If yes then what type of oil?
@HowtomakeCandles_Channel
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Srija, you normally don't have to oil the mold, unless you're using beeswax. In that case, use a spray of vegetable oil, like a cooking spray. With paraffin or another pillar wax, if getting the candle out of the mold proves difficult, just place it in the fridge (not the freezer) for an hour. That should do the job.

I didn't steal my wife's panties John, I just bought a cheap pair from the corner shop :-) You may want to use something made of nylon though as it's not such much the wiping that does it but mostly the heat generated by the nylon.

Does this work the same way with beeswax? Because the only thing holding me back from selling beeswax pillars in my shop is the fact that they sink in the middle as they cool. It's a whole thing. I think I made one perfect one ONCE and I don't know what I did different. Also, I don't use a double boiler. I melt wax in old coffee cans from my dad's workbench. I dumped the nails and took the can, Bing bang boom, no expensive equipment necessary.
@HowtomakeCandles_Channel
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rose, Yes, it's pretty much the same with beeswax. Just don't forget to spray the inside of your molds with a mold release spray or you'll never get the finished candle out... Good luck!

What’s the reason for adding Stearic Acid?
@HowtomakeCandles_Channel
3 жыл бұрын
I'm using straight paraffin wax in this project. Stearic acid makes the wax look "nicer", less translucent. It also makes the wax harder, so it burns longer. You don't need to add stearic acid if you use a pillar blend, as it normally already contains all the additives you might need...

Hi Chrisalice, thank you! I bought these more than 20 years ago from Willowwoods; they don't seem to be around anymore today, I'm afraid. But I tend to use this now: www.howtomakecandles.info/projects/2102/how_to_make_a_universal_wick_holder It's more versatile and doesn't damage the wick (the metal ones have a very strong grip).

Why we should not melt the wax directly?
@HowtomakeCandles_Channel
3 жыл бұрын
Because you could easily get to a dangerous temperature if you melt on direct heat. Only very few applications require direct heat, like candle gel and paraffin wax when you make sand candles. Other than that, always use a double boiler or a wax melter.
