I got 5 packages back last April, I had been watching your videos and decided in mid may to build six 2 frame mating nucs because i had a queen get superseded and didn't want to kill off all cells they had built. I used those up to do walk away splits with and also used them to test shipped in queens. I split those hives and went into winter with 22 colonies. As of today 2/29 all are still alive. I'm in central ohio so we still have 2 months to contend with (one more month till maple bloom) but your info has helped me a lot. I appreciate the advice and videos David.

I was wondering the same thing. My guess is that you have to do this when there is nectar flowing. I use the little polystyrene mini-mating nucs when there is no nectar because there is a reservior for adding 1:1.

David, Your videos and your presentation are grass roots Beekeeping. Well done. Here is an idea for those people who think beekeeping is expensive. What I have been doing from the beginning to build bee hives is this. Go to any construction site that is building houses, apartment buildings, or any type of construction and ask if you can have some of the scrap pieces of board. Most times you are doing them a favour. Then you can build anything you want for free. Plywood, particle board etc is usually thrown out.

I make little entrance reducers, and stick a drywall screw in the front of the reducer, so they're easier to manipulate. I like to build the slightly deeper nucs though, so the swarm cells that are hanging down below the frames will still fit without messing with them.

What gives a newbie like me some verification is that you are telling us these things…WHILE standing in front of hundreds of beehives that appear to all be yours…I’d like to work up to 50 and am hoping that as I get older I can move from sheep to beekeeping an make better use of my land. Can you simply keep the queen from flying by clipping one of her wings? The peak of our nectar flow is from early May to mid-July. But on our farm we just re-seeded with different flora that blooms from early April to Early November. I expanded to six different types of clover that keeps flowers out for 9 straight months as well as the wildflower spread.

I responded to couple of questions below, so I am sorry if this is a duplicate. In the first way, where you move the donor hive . . . how far away should you put it? In the second way, where you leave the donor hive in place and shake extra bees into the mating Nuc, how far should you put it from the donor hive? LOVE your willingness to share with other beekeepers.

Nice job on the video My self not needing a whole lot of Qs take one hive earlier then they make there normal Q cells for swarming and let them go at it by removing the old Q and once those cells are ripe and within a day or two of emerging then harvest them to start some nucs but to make some resource nucs incase theres a problem with a hive then combine these nucs with the colony with problems.

7.32 nice exhaust sound. Thanks for your upload. I am going to use two frame nucs myself now. Had enough of the Apidea mating nucs to gimmicky and they starve in a dearth in a day or two. I don't have enough time to muck with them. Your idea is a steadier system and a full frame nuc has more reserves should bad times come which they do in the U.K. 2019 was the worst June gap l can recall in almost two decades of bees.

Thank you for a great video. It's Nov here in MA and it has been a very warm fall, 70 degrees out today oe n Nov 12th! I looked in my weak hive and found a queen cell that I could see the queen larvae. Last week I must of missed it but I questioned as to why there were some drone cells so late in the season. The current queen is still hanging around and there's some brood left, plenty of summer bees but hardly any winter bees. I'm really perplexed as to what to do so late in the season. My first instinct is to put that queen cell frame in a nuc with the other fames of brood and plenty of bees. your suggestion would be appreciated. The current queen stopped laying well when we had a severe drought in August. I hung on to her to see if she would rebound but she never did. My fault not to act sooner and I regret it.

River Falls WI - Russians were out collecting pollen on Sunday. The trees are starting to bloom everywhere and the Russians have awoken from their slumber. It's in the 30s at night 40s during day - tree sap is running - upwards of 60 this weekend. I have built some 2 frame mating nucs - plan is to expand to three hives of 8-Frames for over winter. Overall, grow from my one hive that made it over the winter into three hives - next year - if over winter is successful for 3 hive - I will really start to ramp up my business of delivering Wisconsin OverWinter Nucs. I never treated these Russians for Mites last year - here's to hoping I have found a healthy hive that manages it own mite loads. I listened to you Dave and started feeding pollen early / w sugar I think I work the hive up right on queue - Time to start feeding and building bees!

Today I was taking some brood and nurse bees to help a starter colony and I rolled my overwintered Barnyard Queen that was WONDERFUL! I am so bummed that I did that. So I just ordered 2 more of your wonderful queens. I also have a Buckfast Canadian hive that made it through squirrely winter. I will be splitting them next week. Here in N.California (Marin County) our nectar flow is generally around March to May or maybe June. It is super early this year though as it's been very warm and dry. Everything seems to be blooming earlier every year with the changing climate. I made 9 splits/nucs last week (it's also early to make splits) from 2 large hives and pulled over a hundred pounds of honey from a couple hives. Still have a bunch more hives to go through and more splits to make but this is the earliest that I've seen the bees this active in the 8 or 9 yrs. I've been keeping bees.

Thanks for the info! I just built one of these and put a frame from one of my other hives in the 2 frame nuc. I tried to feed them via a hive top feeder but they immediately got robbed out, also sparking robbing in nearby hives. I guess I don't have enough bees in the 2 frame nuc to guard the entrance. Any advice on how I can feed them successfully? Did I wait too late in the year? It's hot and dry here in Missouri so entering dearth most likely. Thanks!!

Foragers will go to the spot they came from- so whatever box is at that spot will be where they go. Nurse bees are young and have not been outside the hive so they have not oriented to that location, so they don’t leave until older when they’re promoted to foragers and then they will orient themselves to the location.
